  1. Seems that the article basically quoted Andrews’ tweet

    >The Dublin Bay South TD Chris Andrews, in a series of tweets, defended the attacks by Hamas on Saturday that killed an estimated 700 Israelis, both civilian and military, with hundreds more wounded, or taken hostage.
    >
    >In response to comments by EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen condemning the attack carried by “Hamas terrorists”, Mr Andrews replied: “It seems that according to the EU and Ireland only Palestine has no right to defend itself against murder, torture and apartheid.”

Bizarre that a long time supporter of the Assad regime can get so upset about these things; even before the recent Syrian war the Assads slaughtered non-Alawite Syrians

    >*He had also used the fake account to criticise “dynasties” in Fianna Fail, even though he himself is a grandson of former minister Todd Andrews, a son of former TD Niall Andrews and a cousin of former junior minister Barry Andrews — all part of the Fianna Fail family.*

  2. Is suing newspapers in fashion right now or something?

  3. So he is suing the Times for quoting his tweets ? I guess when SF get into the power the only two publications of record will be the Ditch and An Phoblacht

  4. >The Dublin Bay South TD Chris Andrews, in a series of tweets, defended the attacks by Hamas on Saturday that killed an estimated 700 Israelis, both civilian and military, with hundreds more wounded, or taken hostage.

Is this surprising, considering it’s Sinn Féin?

  5. How can you sue a paper for quoting something you said?

  6. Yet another case of Sinn Féin using legal action to muzzle the media. I hope they don’t abuse the reigns of power to go even further.

  7. I’m absolutely convinced that if they get into power they will actively try and silence journalists.

  8. This is what Sinn Fein do. Sue, sue, sue. Andrews is also a bit of a looper. Basically booted out of FF for cyber bulling Jim O’Callaghan using different troll accounts. Also part of the the Andrews dynasty including Tod Andrews, Barry Andrews, Tubridy and eh… Dave McSavage

  9. Seems like he’ll say he was responding to the second part of the tweet which was left out of the Irish Times article and gives some context to his own tweet.

The second part of the tweet he replied to says “Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks.”. It’s available [here](https://twitter.com/vonderleyen/status/1710568998197178680?t=XKiDWWofeFoJG06aGfwesg&s=19)

His response using similar wording to the phrase above would seem like he was pointing out perceived hypocrisy from the EU on the attacks from Israel on Palestine over the years and not defending the Hamas attack specifically.

The Irish Times said “The Dublin Bay South TD Chris Andrews, in a series of tweets, defended the attacks by Hamas”. You’d have to hope the Irish Times has concrete proof of him “defending the attacks of Hamas” or they have published something untrue which could be seen to injure his reputation. And that’s defamation.

  10. Andrews was never the sharpest knife in the drawer so if his case is based on Tweets he made, then it’ll be thrown out of court.

  11. It’s great to see such support and concern for the freedom of Irish journalists and media.

It’s just a shame this level of support wasn’t there when Micheál Martin abused his Dáil privilege multiple times to launch attacks on The Ditch because of their articles that exposed corruption and dodgy practices in both Fianna Fáil and his coalition partners party Fine Gael, that actually lead to two ministerial resignations and almost cost Donohue his job for his various failures to declare donations and directorships. 12. Pretty slam dunk case of defamation but fuck SF for standing up to constant lies and for somehow not allowing people to freely libel them huh?
