We are new to Belgium, we want to put a built in oven in our kitchen and this is the outlet located where there is a space for an oven (there is no oven in the kitchen currently). We have never seen this kind of outlet before (it has 5 holes). Will we have to get an electrician to change this to a standard outlet? Is this a commonly seen outlet in a kitchen? Thanks in advance.

  1. A built in oven is usually connected to a 5 prong socket like that, it’s called a perilex

  2. It’s an older type of 3-phase connector (although this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s actually 3-phase) which was mostly used for cooking oven/ranges. You encounter it in older houses. Best to have a look at the fuse box to determine what it is.

  3. 3 phases plug, you can use the neutral and a phase to have 230v but it is probably 1.5 or 2.5mm2 (if you are lucky) cable so not enought to support your oven and your cooking table. You may be able to use it in 2X2 configuration but that is not autorised. I guess you are in for a change of cable or you have a 3phases oven.

    Socket and plug rated at 400V, 16A, 3P + N + earth.

  4. It is an old socket, containing the 3 phases, the neuter and the aarding. I don’t think modern equipement has this stekker anymore. Better replace it with modern gear. Also, check the cable, it might be old chape-kabel (fabric insulation) which HAS to be replaced

  5. Yeah, make a plug on your oven or undo the outlet and use pushplugs to connect the wires
