Agricultural water use change is needed. Animal agriculture, particularly beef and dairy, needs to be massively reduced. It’s this industry that uses the most groundwater in the US by far through direct livestock farming and growing feed crops for livestock.
Unfortunately it’s currently politically taboo. No one seems to want to risk the “they are coming for our burgers hysteria”. Until this public sentiment is fixed it will continue to get worse and further threaten water security, food security, and biodiversity.
