Stricter rules on controlling dogs to be introduced

  1. From my understanding XL Bully dogs are not banned in Ireland, is that correct?

Bought a house recently and could have sworn I saw a neighbour walking one, though I’m hoping I was wrong because I knew feck all about dogs.

  2. Fuck off Humphries.

Fines may as well be a billion euros and your first born child – doesn’t matter coz they’re never fucking enforced. And €2m for ‘*dog control services, including the upgrade of dog shelter facilities*’ (AKA county and city pounds) is chicken feed. There aren’t half enough wardens to begin with, as most Local Authorities only appoint one. That means for a county like Galway, there’s one guy ‘policing’ the welfare of all dogs in over 6000 square kilometers of ground. So the slack is picked up by the GSPCA, Madra – and sometimes by persons who really shouldn’t be involved at all – and the public don’t end up drowned in abandoned, neglected, and starving dogs (and who therefore don’t give a shit).

That’s without me mentioning those wardens who do not have the best interests of dogs in mind during the execution of their office. Because they absolutely exist too.

Dog breeding needs to be nuked from orbit – including, and especially, the breeding of greyhounds and lurchers for racing and ‘cultural’ pursuits. Any breeds bred for fighting need to be banned outright. The Kennel Club should be shut down – the concept of ‘pedigree’ dogs is anathema to actual good breeding in the first place, and encourages every dimwit with a dog passport to breed endless litters of inbred puppies ‘because they’re pedigree’. Like it means anything.

Greyhound racing being supported by the Exchequer makes an absolute mockery of this €2m and the incredible work (and € value) put in every year by volunteer organisations. It’s a fucking insult. Galway rescues send a lorry of greyhounds to Italy to be rehomed roughly every two to three months. Every year. That’s just Galway; and that’s just to Italy.

Greyhound racing recieved over €18 million euros of State money in 2022 alone.

I know it’s not popular to say so, but most of this country haven’t got a fucking clue about how to breed, care for, or maintain dogs. We never had a tradition of it and most older generations treat them much the same as poor cattle. The best we can hope for is that at least most will be well intentioned in their ignorance. *Many* are not.
