  1. The European Commission’s annual report on Turkey’s long-stalled EU membership bid is “unjust and biased”, the Turkish foreign ministry said.
The report by the European Union’s executive arm on Wednesday criticised Turkey’s “serious backsliding” on democratic standards, the rule of law, human rights and judicial independence.
“We categorically reject unfounded claims and unjust criticisms, particularly on the political criteria and the Chapter on Judiciary and Fundamental Rights,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Commission also said Turkey did not comply with the principles of the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms in its fight against terrorism.
The Turkish ministry said the allegations were unfair and highlighted “the insincerity of EU’s approach and a clear double-standard”, adding that fundamental rights issues were contentious even among EU member states.
The Commission’s report is meant to update Turkey’s progress towards meeting standards for EU membership, and could strain ties that are already troubled over immigration and, more recently, the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group in Gaza.

Turkey’s bid to join the EU has been frozen for years after having launched membership talks in 2005.

  2. Turkey does not belong in the EU. Too many reasons against it. The strongest are culture and religion. On top of that the economy looks anything but good.

  3. Turkey does not even want to be in the EU, culturally, politically or otherwise anyway.

    So why do they care?

  4. Get rid of Erdocunt and maybe we’ll get somewhere.

  5. Turkey can go look in the mirror for all I care. It does not belong in the civilized world to begin with.

  6. What EU bid? They know the requirements, but keep doing the opposite in most areas and act as if it’s EU fault the application is going nowhere. Assume this is just the usual rabble rousing for internal politics again.

  7. Here’s a really tiny violin I play for you. Now fuck off.

  8. It would be very disappointing if Erdoğan somehow managed Turkey to join EU with it’s current state…

It’s funny to say that while Turkey didn’t improved but regressed since application.

It will never join EU because it’s huge population and huge number of refugees, Cyprus issue and because of Turkey borders non-stable middle east countries.

  9. Turkey belongs as much in the EU as does Donbas belongs to Russia

  10. Isn’t it a bitch when a country wants to be part of some collective but their bid gets blocked instead.

  11. Turkey is the only country that I know that wants to be in EU and at the same time treating with war a country in the EU. I don’t think there is room in EU for blackmailers like Turkey. Being in EU is not a right that other countries has. Turkey tried to storm the borders of Greece. That is unforgettable.

  12. Nope Just don’t want countries run by demonic despots

  13. Turkey wants to be a fucking EU member? How about you pass the Copenhagen criteria?

  14. > The report by the European Union’s executive arm on Wednesday criticised Turkey’s “serious backsliding” on democratic standards, the rule of law, human rights and judicial independence.

They have to act as if this is not true

  15. I guess they conveniently forget occupation of foreign territory. 50 year anniversary is coming soon.

  16. Turkey’s gov is making a mess in NATO. EU doesn’t need that, thank you very much

  17. I would say its pretty just considering that turkey is occupying the land of a member state and threatens other on regular bases.

  18. Turkey’s values and beliefs doesn’t gel with European culture. It was wrong on EU’s part to even consider their membership.
Most of the time it’s leader has a polar opposite stance than the other EU countries.

  19. Maybe they could try renaming the country to “Erdogan’s Democratic Republic of Turkey” to get the point across?

  20. yeah, perhaps having a wannabe sultan as their leader isn’t helping them

  21. How do Turkey expect to get into the EU while occupying member state Cyprus…

Turkey is a destabilizing, opportunistic and irredentist actor in the region. Sad to see it’s trajectory

  22. The EU has enough problems with migrants crossing the Mediterranean, imagine bording Syria and Iraq, or just the immediate deluge from the Afghanis, Pakistanis, and Syrians in Turkey.

  23. There are very clear membership requirements. Start by not murdering journalists and work from there

  24. Imagine complaining about EU unfairly rejecting you when you are trying to join while illegally occupying half of a member country and weekly threaten another member country with invasion …

  25. That’s rough. Anyway, maybe it’s not such a good idea to slide further and further into dictatorship when you want to join a union that venerates democracy, human rights, and justice.

  26. Unlike many people, deep down, *someday*, I would love to see Turkey in the EU. Istanbul is a world city and I love how the country could provide the EU with a lot of influence in the surrounding region.

However, given Turkey’s shenanigans in NATO, I’d be on the streets protesting if they were to become a member tomorrow. And that’s just the tip of the iceber.

  27. Turkey joining EU is catastrophic for European ppl. Totally different culture and politics views. Turkey suits Russia better.

  28. You don’t do too well on the democracy front, so it kinda balances out. 🙄

  29. I would certainly hope the EU is biased towards the EU values.

  30. Turkey isn’t even Europe, much less EU. There is a cultural and religious divide that can’t be crossed.

Then we also imagine Erdogan with veto power in the EU… Are we really that desperate?

  31. *proceeds to shit on human rights and starts criticizing EU*

  32. No one wants welfare case theocracies full of people whose chief attribute is their nationalist brainwashing.

Turkey is not our friend, much less an ally. It never will get better.

  33. How about they start boycotting fascist russia instead of playing both sides, and then we can discuss membership bids?

  34. Maybe they should handle any EU bid by Turkey like Turkey handles the NATO bids from Finland and Sweden. Constantly add more conditions, constantly whine about everything

  35. Well, of course is biased, we not want dictatorships and countries that not respect human rights.

  36. Turkey will never be EU. The EU needs a buffer for refuges/ the poor part of the Middle East . (Just my opinion)

  37. It’s not a bid that you can win. There are requirements to be met, but what do they know if they have a fuck all government
