Really jarring reading this and having the radio on in the background and listening to a group of people demanding the Home Secretary resign for saying the police have double standards when it comes to certain groups.

The police are either terrified of these people or are actively on their side, I can’t think of any other explanation for such a dereliction of duty.
People are criminalised at football matches for singing ‘does your boyfriend know you’re here?’ Or ‘Chelsea rent boys’ based on hate speech or public order legislation but somehow this is acceptable?
They can technically arrest you for telling a brick wall to piss off if there’s a possibility someone nearby might be caused distress by it but this blatant hate speech and incitement of violence is perfectly acceptable. Are they goading us?

Everyone here is blaming the police for being soft or scared of backlash, whereas the final decision about whether or not to prosecute will have ultimately been on the CPS, who don’t give a toss about any protests or public opinion.
It means this decision is far more likely to do with specifics in law rather than political – e.g. Whether a mosque is considered a public place, whether he technically incited violence or not, whether it is beyond reasonable doubt that his speech was intended to cause offence, etc.
The Government have been really effective at blaming the police and CPS for issues and gaps in the law, for which the responsibility sits with HMG and Parliament.
Mark Rowley has specifically stated that there are legal issues with the current law for speech such as this, the CPS agrees and Rowley asks for more clarifications and even legislation to plug the gaps but somehow it’s the police and the Met’s fault for this situation?
It saddens me that the public just lap it all up.
