It’s a longshot I know but the photo is of my aunt and cousin, it would have been taken in the mid 90s. My aunt has since passed away and my cousin would like to visit this place but he doesn’t know where it is. For some reason he thinks it’s somewhere near either Tallaght or Rathfarnham but that’s just a possible memory. Thanks in advance!

  1. That’s where the holy stone of Clonrichert once stood

  2. Send it to that lad on TikTok who can take photos and find where they were taken on Google Maps. I’m not even joking

  3. That is in Salthill. Coming from whitstrand to salthill it’s on the left hand side. Across from.the aquarium

  4. Maybe somewhere around Ticknock? For the most part when you head into the mountains from Tallaght or Rathfarnham, looking downhill would be looking into Dublin City until you hit the top.

Possibly (edited for typo) out by Kippure/Featherbeds way if out by Tallaght, though it tends to be a bit more of a flat expanse there and hillier in the Ticknock direction, looking at the background.

  5. Could this be it?

It’s the highest point in clare if that’s any help, the stone looks different but that could just be down to weathering maybe?

The fact that the two of them are in sandles makes me think it has a road leading close to the top and not a massive mountain hike through bog land.

  6. There’s a chance the back right is a golf course.
But not a triangulation pillar. But looks to have something bolted to it.
    And carved from rock.
    So
    1. Near a road or track.
    2. Popular touristy place
    3. Can be accessed in flip flops
    4. Might have a golf course within 2km
    5. Above 100/150 metres

  7. It is likely modern and on top you can see what appears to be a copper plaque, likely with something written on it. There is a road to the right, so this is something you can drive up near it seems.

  8. Possibly mount Leinster. You used to able to drive most of the way up so very doable in flipflops.

  9. It’s a trig point. Which means it’s a peak. If it’s near tallaght it’s maybe Lughnaquilla or somewhere near there. Problem is there’s a load of hills in that area and it could be any of them. Maybe try and find some local historians or hiking groups from the area to ask?

  10. A friend suggests it looks a lot like a trig pillar or way pillar from Cornwall, around Zennor Hill, because apparently some of those are boxier rather than the sloped shape we’re seeing examples of

  11. I have a photo as a kid and I’m running around something like that at the top of a mountain in Isle of Man….

  12. Looks very like the view point at the JFK Arboretum outside New Ross. Slievecoillte is the name.

  13. There’s one of those overlooking Greystones if you follow the path to Bray that goes over the top of the hills, like above the cliff walk.

  14. Thank you so much everyone for the guesses and the help! Still no definitive answer but a lot more to go off than just a photo and a possible area. Really appreciate it, you’re all legends 💖

  15. Kind of reminds me of the top of the 12 O Clock Hills in Clare, there’s one of them concrete things at the peak I believe. Background in the photo and the approx height looks similar too

  16. I think you should turn to someone living in the area. Surely someone knows of that squared rock. Way too little to go by otherwise.

I have zero insight on where your picture is from, and for that I’m sorry. I’d just like to point out that while it is highly unlikely a child hiked a rugged mountain in flip flops, I’ve seen so many people posting that no one would hike a mountain in sandals, it’s completely reasonable to hike in the mountains in sandals. If you know what you’re doing and are comfortable moving through the mountains, sandals are actually a very logical choice for hiking. They dry fast when they’re wet, they’re light, and with good foot placement the lack of ankle support is not an issue. I felt the need to rant about this because I hate how the boot companies sell unwitting hikers obnoxiously over priced hiking boots with goretex everything. Goretex boots suck and your feet hate them. As soon as you sweat in them or water gets in the top, you’re done. You’re wet until you take them off and dry them. I understand how absolutely random this rant was. Good luck in your search!

  18. I have a very similar photo of me sitting on top of one of these square things, very similar view to your photo and it was at Slemish Mountain in Co Antrim. Was your cousin up that direction? I think the stone got vandalised and doesn’t exist anymore though.

  19. Looks very much like Slievecoillte viewpoint opposite to the Kennedy Arboretum in New Ross.
When you drive all the way up to the view point, via the road opposite to the entrance to the Arboretum.

  20. That’s the Holy Stone of Clonrichert isn’t it?

  21. My only guess is Danby beacon toposcope and centenary plaque , and the land looks very flat in the background
