Good Riddance to Joe Manchin

  1. He’ll be reincarnated in the Know Nothing Party.

  2. Obstructive as he was, Machin was significantly to the left of his West Virginia voters. It’s a miracle that he wasn’t replaced by a MAGA fanatic already. Hopefully he won’t actually run as a presidential spoiler candidate via the exclusively Republican-funded “No Labels party”.

  3. Good riddance to West Virginia as well, because Manchin was only going to survive one more election cycle ***at best***, and that’s with name recognition AND being one of the most conservative Dems in the Senate. Each election was tighter than the last, and I’m sure Manchin realized that his days were numbered whether he ran again or not.

Barring a massive grassroots campaign building back up the Democratic presence in WV, that Senate spot is pretty much lost for the foreseeable future. Which the Dems are already fighting an uphill battle on in most years.

  4. All these good riddance people are gonna miss Manchin when his seat is gone.

  5. “Good Riddance to Dem Control of the Senate”

  6. Good Riddance? Last I checked he was A Democrat and voted on Democratic lines. So he is out and a republican is in . A republican who is in the same caliber as Tommy tuberville.

  7. You won’t say that when West Virginia has a Republican senator that votes with the MAGA nuts on every issue.

  8. Im sure everyone who hates Manchin will just love Senator Jim Justice /s

  9. Joe Manchin is an American hero. That man wakes up every day and asks himself, “What can I do to make life better for the hard-working West Virginian coal mine owners?”

  10. You’ve gotta be an actual moron that doesn’t understand how government works to believe this.

Who else are we going to get in West Virginia that will vote with Dems most of the time?

Besides that, the seat matters for who has control of the Senate.

Now we get another MAGA clown with virtually zero hope of winning a seat in WV in the future.

  11. Pretty sure Justice is unopposed as of now and he’s probably worse for WV and the US than old diamond Joe

  12. That seat was lost either way. At least him not running as an independent (as he said he may) will at least keep it a a 2 way race. I wouldn’t count on having this seat again in the near future though. Dems will have to make it up elsewhere.

  13. He made sure dems got policy through.

He also made sure that those policies were as weak as possible.

  14. Piss off New Republic. Play some chess, not checkers.

  15. What a shortsighted statement. We will soon be very sad that WV and its right-wing electorate is no longer represented by Joe Manchin.

  16. He’s been critical for so many confirmations and votes. Obviously progressives and even most moderate Dems think he isn’t left enough, but he is certainly far left of whoever will replace him. Someone who won’t confirm Biden judges, that’s for sure. In a literal 50/50 environment, it hurts to lose him.

  17. You say this, but let’s be realistic. Manchin sucked but you’re never going to get someone more to the left out of West Virginia. I live near the border. I *still* see Trump 2020 signs along the roads and highways when I’m there. The fact he held his seat as a Democrat as long as he has is a miracle, and we’ll be lucky to ever get another D in that seat again. The focus should’ve been on getting enough Democrats in the Senate that he wasn’t the deciding vote.

  18. In about a year when we have a maga take his spot, people are going to realize how stupid they were for wanting him gone.

  19. Umm, this is a really bad thing. Joe Manchin may not have been the progressive lefty we wanted, but the man won West Virginia with a D next to his name. A feat which will not be accomplished again for some time. The idea that a senator from West Virginia voted with Democrats on *anything* is astounding. And if you think someone less compromising can win his seat I promise you you will be quickly proven wrong.

  20. They will elect someone who will find a way to do less for them, will actively work against their interests, and they will love that person for it.

    Buncha ignorant crabs in buckets.

  21. Ok, if you want Manchin gone that’s fine. But if you wished him gone cause he wasn’t liberal enough… you better bust your ass for the next year to make sure we flip some other senate seats because you can bet that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not let anyone like Ketanji Brown Jackson get seated on the supreme court. Because as it stands this means we’re losing the senate next year if nothing changes.

  22. This is both great news and bad news.

Good: We lost a shitty Democrat.

Bad: We will, undoubtedly, get a MAGA sycophant in his stead.

The takeaway: While all together bad news for democrats and Americans, the current trend *against* Republicans will speak for itself next year on a greater scale. So a minor, if not mildly anxiety inducing, loss.

  23. This is just another example of idealistic leftists who don’t understand that sometimes in life you have a choice between two bad options and you have to decide which is worse. Was Manchin your dream candidate who agreed with all of your policies? Of course not but he was for sure better than the republican who will replace him. You can’t expect a representative of a majority red state to think and vote the same as someone in New York because that doesn’t represent his constituents.

The people who are all celebrating this now will be the ones moaning the most about the guy who replaces him just like the leftists who are threatening not to vote for Biden right now will be the ones crying when Trump is elected and makes your life much much worse.

  24. I don’t like Manchin, but I’m sure I’ll like his QAnon spewing MAGA replacement even less.

  25. He’s the most annoying man in West Virginia, but he’s going to be replaced with an election denying fascist. This isn’t a good thing.

  26. It will be hilarious watching all the Manchin defenders turn on him the second he even thinks about running third party for President. Y’all love him now, after he tanked so much of the Democrats plans, all in the name of being electable in West Virginia.

He’s going to run third party, and when he announces it, suddenly all the “moderates” will stand side by side with the progressives in saying he was never good and he fucked the Democrats. God forbid if he costs Biden the election, because nothing the Progressives say could ever be anything close to what you defenders will say of him if worst comes to worst.

  27. Just like we would be better off with anyone but McCarthy

Just like Muslims would be better off to not vote or vote for a 3rd party candidate to protest Biden’s handling of the middle east crisis

I think this sub has a combination of fools and foreign trolls that encourage the fools

  28. Democrats who didn’t like Joe Manchin are gonna LOVE his replacement! /s

  29. I know everyone here is talking about Dems control of the senate, but can we acknowledge that he is 76 and probably doesn’t want to do this anymore?

  30. It’s pretty much a forgone conclusion we are looking at a republican, actually more like MAGA, Senate, and house jn 2024, which makes it even more crucial for president Biden to hold the white house,

  31. More like “good” riddance to the Dem senate majority. Smh

  32. Goodbye Democratic Senate Majority…

I don’t need to like Manchin to know he is critical to keep the Dems in control of the senate.

  33. Fuck this article. This is a really bad thing. Now we lost a democratic senate chair. He might have been an ass, but he caucused with the democrats and helped get our nominations through. His replacement will likely be very bad for us.

  34. No, god damn. A republican will be elected because the Democrats will put forth someone super left and will lose. This states needs a moderate democrat. I hate how much we are happy to lose to prove a point.

  35. This is a terrible development for Democrats.

His seat will almost certainly be filled with a Republican who will side with Biden < 10% of the time instead of 90% of the time like Manchin. This puts Republicans closer to controlling the legislative agenda in the Senate as well as confirmations.

Any progressive/Dem/left-leaning person who views this is a victory is absolutely delusional.

I don’t love the guy by any means, and I know he could be an obstructionist on his own, but there is no way to consider this any sort of a good thing for Democrats.
