Speaker will let MPs bring babies into the Commons – as long as they behave

  1. Babies don’t bloody ‘behave’. They have not developed the cognitive skills to change their behaviour. Sleep, Feed, Shit and Cry. It’s pretty standard baby activity.

  2. What a ridiculous rule change do you bring babies to your business meetings? No and for good reason.

This PR/woke nonsense needs to stop, especially MPs which earn more than enough to afford nursery or somebody to look after their baby for the few hours a week they are forced in the house of Commons

  3. I’d love to know how exactly it was intended that someone would explain to the baby that there was a standard of behaviour to me met.

It’d all go tits up again anyway once the baby saw that was bullshit and the standard for behaviour was actually lower than that of a new born in the first place.

  4. How does this get past a simple work place risk assessment?

I don’t believe there’s any verified data but a few MPs some time ago did some sound level monitoring in the HoC and it was close to 100db. For a grown adult that’s maximum 15 minutes of exposure but why would you ever subject your baby to it.

  5. What a load of bollocks. Put your baby into childcare like every other working person has to. And instead of this stupid rule change, why not offer more financial support for working parents across the country?

  6. I’m not sure why this is even an issue, it feels like culture warriors on both sides trying to pick a fight.

Babies act like babies. You can often get away with working while they sleep but crying is disruptive. Parliament isn’t made-for-tv but you ought to be able to watch it and hear what is going on.

The parent looking after them can’t really work while their baby is kicking off, and nobody is gonna thank you for changing a shitty nappy there either.

As others have pointed out, there is a crèche already. I think it’s possible to submit speeches as texts, or it should be. (I honestly find it hard to believe that a parliamentary debate changes people’s minds anyway).

The article says the Speaker can allow babies in the Chamber at their discretion. In practice, I guess that means while they are sleeping or quiet, so I’m not really sure what else Parliament can do.

  7. I don’t want my mps to be distracted by a baby when they’re supposed to be listening to important debates. I’d ban phones too.

  8. Can’t the fathers look after their own children whilst the mother is in Parliament? Even if the mother is breastfeeding, she can express her milk into bottles.

  9. A bunch of people in this thread are saying MPs don’t get maternity leave. That is [not](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-56023219) quite the case.

    >MPs are paid in full while on maternity, paternity or adoption leave. But not all their duties in Parliament are covered during their absence.

The issue is MPs’ duties being covered while they are on leave. There is now locum cover for backbench MPs on leave and ministers can be replaced without resigning their ministerial office.

  10. stella creasy reminds of that one lady from the office who was pregnant and went on about it constantly.

  11. Does this mean the Commons will be required to stop screaming and shouting at each other? I’d fucking love for them to change the old traditional rules about the ape howls and jeering. It is time we made the Commons more civilised.

  12. I know PMQs is a lot of braying and nonsense (if sometimes entertaining), but this is just stupid.

Babies are needy things. Often noisy too. They don’t belong in a place of work. It’s not good for the babies or any of the older humans there.

Damn, this world is becoming more and more insane.

  13. Nice. Screaming kids are fine but gtfo if you call the Prime Minister a liar or dodgy.

There is literally a creche in Parliament which makes it a far better provider of childcare than most other employers. And even if they didn’t, you can get childcare arranged on an MP’s salary which is about 4 times as high as a typical dead-end job

  14. The cynic in me thinks this is just a publicity stunt by a politician that wants to be recognised as a mother so that she can be seen as relatable to a huge section of the population that are also mothers.

  15. Ridiculous. So presumably to aviod being hypocritical cunts they are going to legislate to let all of us bring our babies to work.

  16. Maybe don’t have a baby while you’re an MP or don’t plan to be an MP while you have a baby. You cannot do both to a good enough quality.

  17. Seems like no one actually understands what this is about.

It’s due to flaws with the proxy/paired voting systems. The paired voting fell through after a broken pair. The next is the weakness in the proxy voting system which requires 24 hour notice. Don’t personally understand what about that is difficult but guess it is.

Really simple solution. Allow babies in who are too small for childcare or make the proxy system more flexible.

  18. Why aren’t women more pissed about this?

Why on earth would you *want* a precedent that says it’s okay to work with your new born strapped to your chest? Sounds like a nightmare for the mother and extremely disruptive for the baby.

It feels like she’s using her baby as a tool for political point scoring and I find that pretty disgusting.
