u/Nigel_FarageUK has the fifth largest economy in the world.

This isn’t a new thing, the UK has had horrific fuel taxes for years now.
The only reason its so expensive just now is because retailers are not playing fair. Prices have dropped back by about 3p a litre but it’s still more than 10p to much. It should currently be about 130p a litre if supermarkets were passing on the cuts and not taking huge margins.
The majority of the petrol cost is due to taxes you pay to the government. People need to drive so the government can tax it as much as they want. Just remember that electric cars will get taxed equally as badly once the tax income from petrol is below a certain threshold. Once EVs are the dominant form of transport then your cost advantage is history.
Not only is fuel duty a rather hefty 58p per liter, ther is VAT on top of that, a tax on a tax. It’s ridiculous how expensive fuel is, saying nothing of the ridiculous margins retailers are now sitting on.
Came here it confirm I pay more for petrol in NL than the UK – not disappointed.
And yet electric cars are still expensive af, whoop de doo. Meant the cost of transport has just gone up a lot
Hi from the US. Look…prices suck but you don’t want to encourage folks driving petrol guzzling tanks like they do here please it’s fucking insane. SUVs with bonnets that come up to my chin, and I’m 6’2”. Get the fuck out with that nonsense.
Fuel taxes be they for petrol or electricity are nice and regressive so unlikely to change anytime soon. Good ways of making sure the poor are immobile and cold.
Everyone talking about taxes. We should be driving less and using less petrol.
High price’s are a good thing.
Making high profit margins at our expense is bullshit though.
Everyone is still driving combustion cars, so prices are not high enough yet.
