Hi everyone, I’d like to hear your advice please 🙂

I am a Master’s student from Italy, I have a 2-year scholarship from DAAD wich includes a private health insurance. I’ve enrolled in this private insurance in September, while until August I had a public one (I was doing an internship).

Needless to say, I regret taking the private one as I could choose to stay with a public provider. So I obtained an exemption from public insurance and I would like to know whether I can go back.

I know that employees with a typical salary can do it, and indeed I am also working officially as a “Temporary worker” for almost 9.5 hours a week, earning less than 10k gross a year.

Do you think I have a chance? Thanks a lot 🙂

Edit: I’ve read (https://expatrist.com/how-to-switch-from-private-to-public-health-insurance-in-germany/) that students can change in the first 3 months of studies. Is it true?

  1. In case you’re wondering, I’ve called my previous public insurance provider, but every time the responder doesn’t speak English and/or it takes a long time to explain and in the end we do nothing.

The private provider said that it’s maybe possible for me to get a public one, but it sounds complicated or maybe not actually feasible

  2. do you have public health insurance cover in Italy? You’ll need to speak to DAAD, it sounds like a complicated situation. For employees, it can be very very difficult to go “back” once private. Not sure how it is for exchange students.
