Rather than the inference any reasonable person would make from the sign (comparing the suffering of two bombed civilian populations), OP has to make the civilians look guilty too so that it’s okay – “Hamas apologists” & “Nazi Germans”.

    I don’t like OP’s phrasing of the matter but I think ppl are misinterpreting the point.

    The bombing of Dresden was a pretty insignificant event of the Second World War. However, some greatly exaggerated casualty reports (some went as high as 200,000) meant it become a rallying cry for extremists.

    It’s typically used as a whataboutism by Neo Nazis to ‘prove’ that the west was evil or just as bad as the Nazi’s.

    The bombings themselves were a pretty minor event in the context of the war. 25,000 dead was a pretty small number given the hundreds of thousands dying daily. There were valid military targets. It was no different than hundreds of other bombings of German cities

    The point I believe OP is trying to make, though wording it poorly, is that the people who typically make a big deal about Dresden are Nazi’s and this implying that these ppl are.

    Note: whether or not the bombing of German cities was justified at all is a long and complicated topic that much smarter ppl than anyone here (myself included) have been debating for decades. Personally I say they were.

    Dresden is an example of thousands of civilians being killed for no other reason than to “teach the nazis a lesson”.

    The civilians in Gaza (half of them are under 18 years old) have nothing to do with Hamas. Their killings is a war crime, just like Dresden was.

    A lot of people commenting here don’t seem to have any empathy for the civilians being killed im Gaza. I would like to extend a sincere fuck you to all of you.

But their point is actually pretty strong: can entire population be punished for the action of the terrorist clique that rule over it?

  20. Not a slip. Most people where I am (UK) consider the destruction of Dresden to have been a mistake, motivated more by vengeance than any military need.

    The message is that just because Gaza/Germany is/was run by bad people, that’s not a justification for levelling vast tracts of civilian housing and infrastructure and killing large numbers of civilians.

  24. I think the point they make is absolutely fair. Nazis were evil, but burning Dresden with no concern for civilians was also evil. Hamas is evil, but burning Gaza with no concern for civilians is also evil.

  26. Dresden had always been used as an example of horrible loss of civilian life. Same as the nuking of japan or the firebombing of Tokyo. Insinuating you have to be an antisemite or a nazi to think that targeting civilians is horrible is genocidal insanity.

  28. This thread completely misses the point. The bombing of Dresden is controversial, and is by most historians, considered too excessive. It was mainly done to terrorize the local civilians to force a surrender. These people are drawing the analogy because just as in Dresden mostly civilians are being indiscriminately bombed in Gaza.

    1. a fair treatment of an axis collaborateur recieving money for the perpetuation of the holocaust in british mandate

    2. accelerate the peaceprocess by a lot because fire doesn‘t leave room for terrorists to hide

    This is a good comparison, Dresden being part of Nazi Germany doesn’t mean that all German civilians in there were fair targets.

    Same reason that Gaza being under Hamas leadership doesn’t mean that all civilians in Gaza are fair targets.
