Clapham mum fears mould in her council flat is going to kill her

  1. And she is not cleaning the mould and just letting it grow out of control because?

  2. So … Can’t they just, scrape it off, apply some substance that kills it and paint over it, afterwards while also opening the windows more often and using a dehumidifier?
I understand that council is not doing what they are supposed to but their health is at stake.

  3. I get the council are wankers in this situation for leaving it this long but there are preventative measure she can take to getting rid of it or reducing it.

  4. Am I missing something or are people really this infantilised?

Clean it with a mould spray, open some windows, run the heating, buy a dehumidifier, do SOMETHING to address the problem instead of complaining to the council.

I own a house, it gets mould, it’s my responsibility to sort it out and it’s neither difficult of expensive.

  5. Is this really a council issue? Hate to be flippant but seriously every house I’ve lived in from my first cheap flat to my current new build house has a problem with mould if you do nothing about it. It’s the nature of our weather that you need to keep on top of it. She sounds like Ned Flanders parents “we’ve tried nothing and are all out of ideas!”

  6. We are currently in a rented flat.

The kitchen doesn’t have an extractor fan over the hob. Every time I cook dinner, the window has to be opened. Every time I wash up, the window has to be opened.

Even with doing the above, we have mould on the top of the wall. I wipe it down every fortnight with a mould spray. Doesn’t help that the landlord painted the walls with the cheapest Matt emulsion, most of which comes off on the cloth.

  7. I use those ugly, plastic interior dehumidifiers. I keep one on each end of every window ledge, tops of book cases, in wardrobes etc. plus I wipe down my windows and walls that feel wet to the touch in the morning and it still doesn’t solve the problem completely. I clean mould patches off as I see them but through winter it’s an ongoing problem. My home isn’t too bad due to the steps I take but it’s a pain in the bum to follow the routine of wiping off damp and checking for mould every morning. I don’t think council flats are adequately ventilated.

  8. Everyone commenting saying it’s on her to make an effort, it really isn’t. That’s mould from outside damp, behind units and counters. How are you meant to treat that every day?

One she may already be doing it, two it wouldn’t make a dent in mould that bad, and the problem is still there a couple days after, and three that costs time and money she may not have and shouldn’t need to spend.

Have some humanity, this does kill people and it’s not acceptable or on the tenant to resolve.

  9. most mould is caused by people not understanding how water works, drying clothes indoors with the windows closed, and thinking the water will magically disappear, not just condense on the coldest part of the house.

  10. Then Clapham Mum needs to clean the mould and then ventilate her property in order to stop the mould returning.

Just because you’re provided with a home doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be the one to look after it.

  11. British housing moment.

The problem: Ancient, damp buildings a century or older practically made of mold with boilers ready to explode any second sectioned off into basements and attics as separate “properties” for £2000pcm by greedy landlords.

This sub’s cope: “Well you see it’s the residents’ fault, they were cooking too much! What do you mean fix the issue? Nooo we can’t build modern appartment buildings, even though in other wetter countries with snowy winters mold is not tolerated and is something that either doesn’t happen or if it does leads to arrests for the people responsible with such poor neglectful construction and maintenance, just open the window innit.”

I guess that’s our lot, Americans get shot, we die from the mold.

  12. lmao are people really suggesting a solution is scrubbing with vinegar?

Bad enough that it’s moody third world standards in housing in the UK but suggesting mold can be fixed like that. Jesus wept.

  13. Every sanctimonious Redditor here in their nice middle class homes knows how to be poor better than this desperate woman. Yes, she IS a professional cleaner if she can’t fix this you think your patronising vinegar solution is the answer? The arrogance.

  14. You just open a window and get a bottle of Mould and Mildew spray. It’s not difficult.
