In an interesting reversal of normal procedures, Police are de-canvassing the area.
How do we know the tents were homeless? They could have been having a staycation? Tents deserve some time off too.
They can’t control the extremists marching through London (both sides) but fucking hell gonna make sure the homeless suffer absolute cunts.
Well if ever you’re heading to an election 20 points behind why wouldn’t you start a war with the homeless? This isn’t even gonna start to fix anything of note
Not a police operation. Police only there to stop the workers from getting beaten up. Same story as with immigration enforcement; it’s more fun to blame the old bill.
Nothing to see here, just throwing away 90% of someone’s possessions.
Might not have been homeless, might have just been in them as a lifestyle choice before going to their houses at night
80% of these are second tents being rented out on AirBnB
Very sad. I understand a hospital asking for people to be relocated but throwing away their tents and possessions is disgraceful. They could at least have been moved to a near-by park.
What else do they do though, just allow the encampments to grow and grow like they have in America?
You can go for miles and see encampments covering pavements in such a way that people in wheelchairs or with prams can’t traverse them. They’re a fire hazard and a crime magnet.
We need to invest in a housing first homelessness solution but we also can’t just let massive, dangerous homeless encampments spring up.
UK Police.
Weak against the strong, strong against the weak.
My main issue is the amount of litter so many rough sleepers leave around the place like it’s someone else’s duty to clean it all up.
Just before the freezing temperatures of winter. How lovely our government has such contempt for those less fortunate.
Cunts.
This would’ve been the day that I would’ve resigned from my position in law enforcement.
Are they going to be offered 3 star hotels at a minimum, or is that reserved for asylum seekers?
Isn’t destruction of property a prosecutable offence?
Always good to see the police helping the poorest in society’s lives get even shitter. Cold months coming in, great lets stand by and make sure the council throws out those tents. What could go wrong, apart from lots of poor people dying months down the line when it gets really fucking cold.
This genuinely made me feel sick to my stomach. Awful, awful way to treat anyone, let alone people already down their luck.
Everything’s fucking grim about this:
* A dispersal order signed off by a senior police officer. All they’re going to do is move their tents somewhere else. What else do they expect them to do?
* Binning the tents. Yeah, so now they’re sleeping rough, but this time without even a sheet of plastic to keep the rain off. Well done.
* Not even emptying the tents but crushing their personal belongings as well. None of this should even be lawful.
* Putting barriers up once they’ve left to stop them returning. No money to investigate thefts, but money to burn on shitty barriers. Apart from the barriers being easily moved, are they going to just go round the whole city putting barriers anywhere which offers a tiny bit of shelter from the rain? It’s clearly not scalable.
* The hospital saying it was ‘public health concerns’, which is obviously nonsense.
Honestly how can a human be a part of the police if this is what they have to oversee?
Just imagine standing there knowing your job is to make sure homeless people don’t retaliate from having all of their merger possessions thrown away.
Heroin user gets kicked out of a hostel due to beating up another resident and ends up on the street. The homeless team finds him somewhere else to live but our heroin user doesn’t want the address as it’s a ten minute bus ride from town. It’s much easier to roll out of a tent in the City Centre, beg, score and go back in the tent. The tent is located smack bang in the City Centre of a City that relies heavily on tourism. The tent is surrounded by filth. God forbid the authorities attempt to move him on and get him back into a hostel. If it was up to Reddit, we’d have City Centres full of tents with heroin users begging and shooting up and filthing up the areas. Tents in my neck of the woods are full of criminals who have been kicked out of numerous hostels. They commit crime, shit in doorways, beg, litter and shoot up in public. The public complain but it’s all the nasty Police’s fault. Get a grip.
They might not be nice to look at but if the government had invested in building affordable and social housing years ago then it would not need to be doing this now. Homelessness has been going up for years, both rough sleeping and the hidden homeless, the Tories spends so much money keeping people in B&Bs, hotels and who knows where else so that they do not have to build affordable housing at the same time. They then have the audacity to destroy people’s tents because of the problems they have created themselves by ignoring the inevitable. It is disgusting but they just claim it is a lifestyle choice and their supporters believe them without question, because admitting the Tories have failed is not something they are capable of.
