Botox enthusiast Chris Packham has a moan about the wrong type of trees, they’re still more natural than his face.
This is a major problem all over – tree planting could draw down carbon, but if it destroys the local eco-system in the process it’s not helpful. Plus in much of the Flow country in northern Scotland, planting trees dries out the ground, causing the peat to decompose and actually release CO2.
Unfortunately far too many folk chasing badly designed grant schemes to get rich with no interest in actually providing solutions.
Why is the SNP allowing non-natives to plant trees? Progressive politics gone mad.
Reforesting the UK is desperately needed but it needs to be fone properly. Honestly a good place to start is the Scottish Highlands but I think another good place to start is to start connecting all of the pockets of ancient woodland we still have. There are a lot of them but they are all very small areas. I think it would also be a good idea to employ people to manage these woodlands to make sure they are kept in good order.
This is what’s happened in Ireland, most forest cover is ecologically fucking damaging sikta spruce and similar.
Dead forests that sustain no life in them really, acidify the shit out of the soil, and eventually get clear cut and replaced when harvested for timber.
The only good thing about the sikta spruce plantations is they are spooky as all fuck to camp in. Proper Blair Witch vibes.
Don’t let it happen to your woodlands.
Proper re-foresting takes a long time, which is not something people want to hear these days. Benefits being decades away is not what people want to see, they want benefits in five years or less, which results in poor planning and grants being given for projects which sound flashy, but do not offer the best reward.

Too much focus is on planting pine. There are a lot of species of trees native to the whole of the UK. This is a good list of natives https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/native-trees/
