Johnson has a chance to end homelessness now – if he dares to seize it

  1. Yeah never going to happen. The government want people to be homeless.

Not only that but most homeless put either have mental health problems, are on drugs or both. You can give them help, you can give them a home but a lot of then will slip back to their old ways.

  2. You’d sooner find parliment suggesting the homless for ‘Solent Green’ instead of a realistic way of housing them.

  3. > The Connection said it was unable to let Remes access its night shelter because, in its words, he did not have a “realistic and sustainable route off the streets”.

I am wondering what is behind this. If he was a using addict, then The Connection would not be able to house him, they cannot allow illegal drug consumption on their premises.

But more generally, I get a bit irritated with this “we can solve homelessness” clickbait. Like its just about giving someone a roof over their head and that is that. There are street homeless who do not want this. There are those with serious mental health issues and dependencies who cannot cope being cooped up. We need a lot more than just roofs and beds.

It would be nice if the Guardian spoke to people involved, rather than spew this second rate clickbait. If they bothered to ask, they would find there are a number of initiatives in this area that will hopefully make positive differences. There are countries in Europe where homelessness is almost non-existent, where we can learn things.

  4. Even if it was only just for political point-scoring, he will not do it. He thinks he is born to lead and that the poor were born to that fate too. Poverty is a character failing and a sign of personal weakness in the eyes of some, including most of the Tory government, the Victorian idea of poverty is not confined to Dickens’ novels. Besides, the fear of homelessness is a great way to control people: they will do whatever they can to avoid that fate. That means people will stick with low-paying jobs they hate, where they are treated poorly, because it is still better than homelessness.

  5. There aren’t even that many rough sleepers. I’ve seen estimates of between 5000 to 8000 people in the entire country. You would think it would be possible to provide for such a small number of people who are in such a desperate situation.

But a combination of addiction and mental health problems means that it will take a serious plan to do anything about it.

If it was just a case of giving them each a flat to live in, it would have been fixed decades ago.

  6. The only thing he’ll seize is the fifty from his wallet to burn in front of the homeless person, before doffing his top hat, clicking his heels and buggering orf at speed.
