  1. Found this on a completely unrelated to Ireland website and thought it would be good to give it some visibility here. Hopefully it’s properly investigated, getting a bit tired of all the youtube new “features” lately.

  2. >Hanff [filed a civil complaint](https://www.theregister.com/2023/10/26/privacy_advocate_challenges_youtube/) to the Irish Data Protection Commission against YouTube’s browser interrogation system, which detects ad blocking software and [refuses to play](https://www.theregister.com/2023/11/06/youtube_ad_blockers_opinion/) videos unless adverts are allowed or subscription money handed over. The regulators are right now waiting on a reply from Google to provide an update on the status of that claim.

    >Pointing to [decisions](https://www.theregister.com/2023/11/01/eu_data_meta_networking/) by courts and data protection authorities in Europe that have disallowed behavioral advertising without explicit consent, Hanff argues that Meta has been processing data for behavioral ad targeting without a legal basis to do so for at least the past five years. And thus it follows, he says, that deploying and executing scripts that monitor behavior and gather data, is also unlawful.

  3. I feel like in 5 years time us Europeans will have received multiple threats from Google, Tik tok and Meta about pulling out of the market because their predatory personal data mining business model is no longer as profitable in Europe.

I imagine the EU will call their bluff and in most cases the multinational will fall in line just like Twitter did. If they do leave then I’m sure European start ups willing to adhere to the law will fill the void and we will have more Unicorns in the EU than we currently have.

With the exception of potential job losses in Ireland I’m really having a hard time seeing where these new privacy laws would be bad for European citizens. I’m very grateful to be European.

  4. Youtube have gone super aggressive with the ads in the last year or 2 and push to pay a sub. In the last few weeks they’ve gone as far as blocking people using ad blockers.

I’d have no issue with some ads but it’s way over the top now and most are scummy gambling ads for 888 and Mr Green etc.

  5. The register is like the daily mail of tech. They called me up on my personal phone once (how did they get my number?), pretended to be someone else and tried to get information about a hack that the company I work for was hired to look into. They ended up getting in contact with one of the finance people who was very recently bereaved and on leave and tricked her into confirming that the customer was a customer. Pricks.
