  1. The co-director of Disney Animation’s Wish revealed whether the company would look into creating new 2D animated movies.

Wish sports a unique look. While it is 3D animated, its style is directly inspired by the many 2D movies that came before—though it’s been a while since Disney Animation launched any 2D animated films. Nonetheless, Wish has received positive reviews thus far.

The last Disney Animation movie in 2D was 2011’s Winnie the Pooh and The Princess and the Frog before that. Since then, the studio leaned fully into 3D animation, producing hits such as Frozen, Moana, and Encanto.

In an exclusive interview with The Direct’s Russ Milheim, Wish co-director Chris Buck commented on whether Disney Animation would ever consider dabbling in 2D animation again.

The filmmaker exclaimed that the studio would “absolutely” look into including 2D animation in their future movies, noting how the character of Star in Wish was actually 2D in early tests:

“I think, absolutely. This film was inspired, obviously, by the legacy and the 2D animation. And the look has a somewhat 2D look with the lines on the characters. We did early tests with Star as 2D. But yeah, I think we keep exploring.”

Speaking on the unique style of Wish, Buck spoke about how the movie was the product of an ever-evolving style:

“The nice thing is, we started with some shorts, you got ‘Paperman’ and ‘Feast’ and ‘Far From the Tree’ that sort of explored the look that we adapted, and we kept evolving. We had never done it in full feature before. So that was going to be a challenge. I would say absolutely. You just don’t know what the next thing is going to be.”

Disney’s Wish hits theaters on Wednesday, November 22.

  2. As much as I prefer the 2-D because thats what I grew up with…most kids don’t seem to respond the same way. I have a 2 year old that loves Frozen and Moana, sings the songs and watches the whole thing…can’t get her to sit through a 1/4 of the older 2-D movies. Just seems to catch their attention differently.

  3. Moany grown ass adults longing to recapture their youth just let out a cheer across the world

  4. As long as they can have 2D and 3D co-exist, it would be a miracle.

  5. Just rip off Sony with their Spider-verse, oh wait they patented that tech

  6. GOOD. It’s not that I hate the CG stuff, but the projects using it in congress with 2d are like, so much more pleasing and expressive than the totally CG stuff. And so much non-feature animation is still 2d and just looks better, tbh.

  7. “Future movies may be good”
    “Future movies may be original”
A lot of things can be maybes but until it happens idk

  8. It would be awesome if they brought back Deep Canvas technology like they did with Tarzan. That tech wasn’t fully explored because of the rise of 3D animation.

  9. Traditional animation remakes of traditional animation classics. Woo can’t wait.

  10. Walt’s frozen head just smiled. This would be a win for Disney if they did this.

  11. Why not better continue with live action versions of all movies? They’ve been SO GREAT lately… can’t wait for Snowhite now …. 🙄

  12. They should remake that lion king movie from a few years ago into 2D! Should make tons of money!

  13. that’s fine as long as it can be made as live action 15 years later

  14. Or they could do like Studio 4C and figure out how to make 3D look like 2D hand animation like in the movie Tekkonkikreet.

  15. Maybe they had to animate Wish the way they did as a transition back to 2D?

Idk… just trying to find someway to make sense of why the animation for it looks like that of straight to Dollar Tree DVD bin.

  16. I highly doubt that unless it’s all digital. Hand drawn animation is dead. When Pixar started making a ton of money Disney was like we can do this but the final nail in the coffin was when Alvin and the Chipmunks beat Princess and the Frog in theaters.

  17. That one proof of concept short film Disney made like 10 years ago blending 2D hand drawn style with 3D rendering was absolutely stunning and I’m sad it never really went anywhere with their feature films.

IIRC it was like the first Oscars they won for a short film in like 40+ years at the time, Paperman I think? But I’m really hoping they do more with that style because it was gorgeous and such a breath of fresh air. All these homogenized 3D animated character models feel so devoid of that unique flair that the 2D films used to have

  18. Ummm it’s not the medium, it’s the poor decisions.
Live action, 3d or 2d, make absolutely stupid choises and a project will fail.

But let me guess. Couldn’t possibly be you disney, it MUST be something else.
That’s it, it must be the medium.
They can’t learn and as such, more disaster awaits these clowns and the cast and crew of their movies will suffer more.
