This is the third letter that I’m posting written by Udo to his former G.I. Friend, Glenn. If you would like to read the second, it is [here:](https://www.reddit.com/u/Heartfeltzero/s/R0OSPSZwse)
This letter was written by a young German boy named Udo Graumann. He had spent time and gotten close with an American G.I. named Glenn Abdon during WW2 while Glenn was in Germany. He was in the 80th Infantry Division. They exchanged addresses and this was the third letter the boy sent to Glenn a few years after the wars end. The Second letter was written in June of 1948, after Udo received a response from Glenn. This letter was written about 2 and a half months later.
The letter reads:
“ Hello Glenn!
I have written you already 2 1/2 month ago, but you did not answer. I think that the letter did not reach you. I have now some pictures of myself. I’ll send them to you with this letter. In the last letter I wrote you, there were a number of nice stamps for you in. I would be very sorry if you did not receive these stamps. Here in Germany we have new stamps now, the 4th series. But we have also new and good money and so came that it is hard to live. With next letter I’ll send you some. From Mrs. Ellen Bently I received a letter 2 weeks ago and I wrote to her in return.
She is an eager girl, and tell her “Hello”. In my holidays, I was with my father through Westfalen, Münster, and so on. It was very nice. I am waiting on a letter from you.
Your friend,
Udo”.
Another Redditor previously found additional information regarding Udo and Glenn.
This is an excerpt from a news article about Glenn that was found online. It reads:
“Abdon also befriended a 13-year-old German boy while serving. He said the boy spoke three languages and loved to follow him around and help him with his duties. After leaving Germany, Abdon said he and the boy corresponded by mail.
”The kid got to be a real good friend of mine,” he said, holding a letter from the boy. “Imagine that – a German boy and an American soldier.”
Abdon recalled one day when he and the boy decided to go fishing, as food for civilian Germans was rationed, and many were hungry.
“We decided we were going to have a fish fry. So, I picked up my rifle and we walked over to this stream,” he said. “There were trout playing. Needless to say, him and his mother had fish.”
Glenn passed away on February 7th 2007 in Dayton Ohio. There was an Udo that had a birthday that would line up with this Udo’s age, He was born in 1932, died in 2012.
