Usually in a war of this type, where a country with a much larger and more technologically advanced military invades a smaller neighbor the number of casualties is higher for the defending country. For example, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon etc. But in this conflict we are constantly told that the losses are 3 to 10 times higher on the Russian side. We are also told this is true regardless of whether Ukraine are advancing or defending.
