  1. Birds and amphibian animals will probably thrive in these conditions. Ground is oversaturated but to be honest, it probably always was since it’s literally called ‘ vallei van de drie beken’.

What do you expect the government needs to do? Even with all water gone, it’s still a swampy mess…

  2. It is located in a river valley with floodplains that serve as water storage areas. If all the water were to be drained off through there, cities like Diest would be in danger for flooding.

Also, if you are going to live somewhere, always check beforehand whether it is located in a “overstromingsgebied” or “overstromingsgevoelige zone”. This can save a lot of trouble later on.

  3. The biggest issue is probably how polluted the water is now due local chemical companies historically polluting the shit out of it.

  4. It’s sad for those hobby gardens people. But for the wildlife, this is something that comes naturally so I don’t think intervention for them is needed.

  5. Yeah, sorry about their garden but, you know upfront if you´re living in a flooding area. This is anture as it should be. I live near the dender and fields get flooded all the time, that´s just how it is

  6. Bruh i live there i dont think this is that bad considering how the factory dropped shit in a small river not too far from my house. The trees are all dead and it has been more then 18 ago since they dropped it. So i defenetly think there are worse things. And after all its called “het broek” for a reason right.

  7. No farmer his worth would build his stable there, in the drone footage it’s just one shed 5 times in different angles. The area is a flood plain, essentially made to contain the water to avoid it flooding the city. It’s the same in Leuven, the “doode beemde” has been (re)used in this effect for ages.

We had a field next to the doode beemde to let our sheep graze, it was summer use only, cause in winter it looked exactly like the above footage. I guarantee you, this is a “broek” or swamp specifically used for this purpose for eons.

  8. I feel really stupid that I honestly believed this was bad for nature and animals.

The people who asked me to film here told me this and i believed them. Thank you to everyone who left an informal message under this post. At least now I know how it really is.

  9. Kameraad ik ben van Diest, die zones zijn jaren geleden terug als overstromingsgebied bestemd, hetzelfde geldt in Webbekom.

  10. Not to say it’s fun that your garden is flooded, but don’t you know things like that before you start living somewhere? Normally when you buy a house/ground it should say if you live in a flood zone.

  11. This happened because natuurpunt refused to clean the ditches in combination with the large amount of rainfall this year. It is indeed a wetland, but rarely this wet.

Not cleaning the ditches is a good idea in dry years, which just happened to not be the case this year. No one can predict what a year will be like.

  12. 1. it is a natural reserve
    2. if it wasn’t, the state won’t do nothing because it is Bart Dewever ‘s responsability.
    3. the guys who complain try to make money by building real state there.

  13. Well, this is the first time I see or hear from this. If Wallonia was aware of it we would also be chocked. Unfortunately, the rtbf and rtl are only (and now barely) talking about what happened in Liège Province. I am with you and the victims of this. Truly a disaster.

  14. Another example of this kind of reserve is de Demervallei. They’re upgrading it’s water capacity by reopening the ‘meanders’ in the Singmaplan.
