Most Americans in new poll say Congress shouldn’t use government shutdown to bargain

  1. Yes – Republicans must stop being just Legislative Terrorists and “Hostage Takers”.

  2. Making a budget is Congress’ job. Everyone in Congress is paid much more than the average American to do their job. I’m not allowed to dictate the terms I will work under and they shouldn’t be allowed to either. It’s your job to solve it. Do your job and solve it.

I’ve been a big fan of the idea of all the US workers general striking if Congress forces a government shutdown over ego. You don’t work, neither do we. You are paid from our taxes and if we don’t work, you don’t get those taxes off our wages.

  3. What is this soft-ass “both sides” language? I looked up government shutdowns of the past and, and please correct me if I’m wrong, it seems to me that only the Republicans have weaponized shutdowns. Conflating the actions of the GOP within Congress and Congress as a whole is deeply irresponsible and wholly intentional. In other words, this poll sucks. Do better.

  4. The bargaining happened when the bills and budgets got passed, this is just making the payment. It’s like agreeing on splitting the check, ordering a ton of drinks and apps yourself, then getting the final (still shared) tab, and raising a fuss about how much everyone spent ’cause you’re broke this week.

  5. They’re going to be pissed when they learn what republicans have been doing for 30 years

  6. No shit. Now blame the republicans because every time they are the minority party they push this shit.

  7. Congress is the honey badger when it comes to what the people want.

  8. Most Americans aren’t taking foreign dark money to scuttle the country. Republicans are.

  9. Unfortunately a large group keeps voting for Republicans, who have the main goal of using the government shutdown for political reasons. So…

  10. It’s the only leverage Republicans have left outside of manifesting social issues out of thin air.

  11. 100% agree. We will never have a balanced budget, so let’s end this grand standing once and for all.

  12. Most americans don’t want republicans in office, yet they control a disproportionate number of seats across almost all levels of government.

  13. People mistakenly say “[it should be like Australia in 1975](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Australian_constitutional_crisis) – all the people in Parliament got fired when they couldn’t agree on a budget.” While that is a feature of the Westminster system (budget bills are effectively votes of confidence), that’s not quite how it happened.

The Liberal Party was in power for the previous 23 years until the Labor Party took over in 1972. Labor had a thin majority and was re-elected with an even thinner majority in 1974. The Liberals tried to frustrate the government’s agenda as best as possible in the meantime. Then, when vacancies opened up in Parliament, State Premiers would appoint Labor members hostile to the Federal Government so they had no effective majority.

After some controversies, the Liberal Party in the Senate then began to block all supply bills unless the government called an election. The Governor General stepped in and eventually dismissed the government and made the opposition leader PM, who called an election that they won in a landslide.

In the aftermath of all that, they amended the constitution that vacancies had to be filled with the same party to preserve the balance of power. But they did not ‘correct’ the one flaw that allowed the Liberals to hold the government hostage – the Senate can still to this day block the supply bills if they choose to do so.

Now I’m condensing down a lot of the details and nuances of this, but sometimes there is a grand strategy at hand even if they are playing it by ear.

  14. They should also make it a law that politicians don’t get paid when they do this as well, and if this situation happens then they need to stay until it’s resolved (as in no going home for the summer or any other time off)

  15. REPUBLICANS are the only mfers that do this and every time it’s a WTF moment because WTF! Why would they do this!? Shutting down the government is ALWAYS FKN STUPID!

  16. “….but they will continue to vote for the 1 party that does it anyway.”

  17. You mean they’re supposed to do their jobs the other 360 days of the year and actually deal in good faith with each other? That may be possible if the GOP was a legitimate political party interested in actually governing, not a Christofascist terrorist organization solely doing the bidding of the ultra rich donor class.

  18. What a broken party with absolutely dogshit to offer you

  19. That’s reassuring.

Only idiots think dicking around with the nation’s line of credit and furloughing thousands of government workers to push legislation is a reasonable strategy.

  20. Duh. That’s what they are supposed to be doing the rest of the time.

  21. Let’s check with Congress to see if they give a shit what the American people think, nope.

  22. The GOP are responsible for every credit downgrade that the United States has endured because of their intransigence and brinksmanship.

That’s on top of them being fine with deficit spending when they are on power *while* enacting ludicrous tax giveaways to the 1%.

The only things the Republican party have mastered are tricking their voters into voting against their own interests and looting the public coffers to enrich those who have more than they can spend in a hundred lifetimes.

Certainly not governance or good public policy.

  23. Congress should actually pass a budget instead of continuing resolutions, like they are supposed to do. That way the all or nothing vote bargaining would go away.

  24. No Congress member, supreme court justice, or presidential cabinet member should receive any pay or benefits during a shutdown and no back pay.

    No work. No pay.

  25. Imagine going to work every day, *not* doing what your paid for and keeping your job *for years* while making *millions* from insider trading. Getting cost of living increases regularly on top of the best healthcare money can buy for pennies.

*We the people* need to put a stop to this.

  26. It may be the only time something actually gets done.

  27. It’s not “Congress.” It’s Republicans. As in, 100% of the time, when the Republicans control the house and there’s a Democrat President, they hold the government hostage.

  28. I still say we need a new law that says if a budget isn’t passed, the previous session’s budget is automatically renewed for another term. (However long the previous budget was passed for.)

Therefore they have to pass a new budget to make *CHANGES*, not to just keep the country running at all.

  29. And the Republicans shouldn’t use their religiously based arguments against all abortion as a reason to keep shutting things down too. It’s getting really old really fast. Can we please shut them down with this shit for good

  30. Not my republican friends. They think it’s a valid method of negotiation to own the libs and control the out of control spending.

‘course, none of them can give me clear examples with proof (one guy brought up the cost of the military providing health care to trans soldiers, but had no numbers of course!) of this out of control spending.

    OH WAIT UKRAINE

  31. I thought only foreign terrorists threaten to shut down governments. What the bloody frack is this “both sides” bull shyte?!

  32. The GOP does not give a fuck about what most Americans want

  33. Need to stop acting like they did such a good job when the shutdown is averted too. It’s like taking a shit on the floor, then cleaning it up, and giving yourself a pat on the back for cleaning the floor.

  34. Uhh no shit? And Republicans still think it’s their best plan, even though every time they do it, it backfires spectacularly for them.

  35. That’s right… congress should behave as adults and start legislating for the people. They need to pass a budget and stop playing game.

  36. I only agree because I don’t think there should even be a discussion about further funding a ridiculous level of deficit spending. Shut it down, kill everything we can and let people suffer until we’re ready to have the difficult discussion of raising taxes and cutting spending that it’ll take to run a balanced budget that involves a long term debt elimination element.
