Many families have stories of how Ukrainian surnames were Russified by adding typical Russian suffixes such as -ov or -ev. Thus, by means of these documents, Ukrainians were “turned into” Russians. A Zhuravel would become a Zhuravliov, while a Shvets would become a Shevtsov. The same colonial modification applied to the names of cities.
