Welsh, Scottish and NI governments imposed arbitrary restrictions based on hysterical media predictions and dodgy ‘worst case scenario’ modelling. Glad to see England didn’t follow.
Is this the new constant threat approach Johnson is taking now? No restrictions this week, but there *might* be next week!
It’s like an anti-Father Christmas, if you’re naughty England, Father Restrictions will visit!
I bet it does wonders for SME planning, continuity and resilience measures, not to mention the general public’s stress and anxiety around this.
It might (hopefully!) be based off all this early data surrounding the whole AZ vaccine thing giving better long-term protection, which is why the UKs deaths just haven’t seemed to rise with cases unlike Europes
Fingers crossed it has some grounds to it and out deaths stay the way they are.
The usual suspects will have to be washing their bedsheets, again, after this news.
>BBC political correspondent Ione Wells said she understood there would be no new legal restrictions for England on Monday but said that did not rule out more guidance, or stronger language urging people to be careful.

Stronger language?
Is Whitty going to start telling people to ‘wear a fucking mask’?

From wandering around in central London today, it appears to me that people have made their own rules. More mask wearing, smaller groups, more social distancing. Without any legislation.
Guys he can’t close stuff down now. A lot of people are on holiday and go back after NYD. Announcing a lockdown now will give us way too much notice. He’ll do it next Monday.
Great news, hopefully we remain without further restrictions

Boris to Sturgeon and Drakeford: ‘We’ve made you look a right knob.’
Looks like the gov has accidentally stumbled into getting it right.
Cases look like they’ve peaked – though it’s possible that the 20% drop since the peak at the weekend is due to people not wanting to test over Christmas, that seems like a lot (and it’s three days of daily falls).
Hospitalisations are increasing in the national figures (up to the 21st, the latest currently published) but not by enough to be a serious problem, particularly if the stay length is shorter. The number of people on ventilators keeps going steadily down and is at its lowest level since mid-October, so there’s a bit of capacity available. London is panic central but even there the hospitalisations look like they’ve peaked.
What argument is there for more restrictions at this point? Even the “better put them in place just in case” doesn’t make sense any more as we now *do* have data about severity and hospitalisations, and it’s good news.
With the disastrous polling for the tories last week I’d be shocked if England sees restrictions any time soon.
Fuck me, let’s be honest, we want to know if our New Year’s Eve plans are good to keep. If that means table service or no more than 3 house holds getting together then say so. Or, ‘you’ve had your booster, so take your chances’.
Wonderful news. Looks like numbers are going down and there was never a need for a Winter lockdown in the first place. Insane that the ultimate peak was on Christmas Day, and I guess that’ll go down as a trivia question in years to come.
Who’d have thought that we had high cases because everyone was testing before Christmas? Cases will plummet now (with maybe a small spike around New Years). Oddly the tories may have got this one right
Good. The government in England actually seem to be being quite sensible and following the evidence for once. Never thought I’d see the day.
Nice. I just won a bet. My doom mongering work mate insisted a lockdown was guaranteed. I just won £20 and kept my liberty
I got a fucking BBC news alert to tell me there is no update and now it’s getting traction here.
The pandemic is over, the vaxxed are getting mild symptoms, the unvaxxed pretty much the same apart from the rare severe case but if people are gonna get a jab they would have done by now.
No more boosters, no more mandates, masks recommended and back to normal.
Good, looks like hospitalisations haven’t massively increased. I can imagine how this news would upset more than a few on here though.
Weird how you ‘follow the science’ people are now unwilling to follow the science…
It’s like you just want authoritarian rule or something…
At this point, there on a knife edge. No one is ok with any more restrictions or lockdowns etc.
Whether your a business owner, or simply a civi who wants their freedom back.
If they introduced any more rules at this point no one would listen, everyone I spoke to in the run up to Christmas basically said, “do one boris”
This has got to come to an end, omincron is basically the flu and if it follows the trend it will become weaker and weaker. I have a business and I won’t be shutting for nothing now, I’ve got it all on the line, one more lockdown and I’m done, I couldn’t stop if I wanted, which I don’t.
I’ll take my chances with the flu, frankly even the delta variant on building sites, no one gave a shit, and that hasn’t changed. People have died and I know that’s terrible. But it should be your personal choice to take the risk and mix with people, if you don’t stay at home but the freedom of choice is essential.
We’re absolutely ravaged where I work, 1/4 have COVID right now and we’re struggling to stay open. Was hoping for a lockdown to just reset everything honestly and get people back and healthy.
At this point it’s pointless. Who would take this government serious on tight restrictions at xmas?
Authority’s gone, baby, deal with it!
Can I just point out if people aren’t getting a PCR then their symptoms are probably just a cold so really does it matter if their cases aren’t recorded and we have artificially lower numbers.
Boris is taking it, right up the ‘arris, from the erg and the psychos on the back benches. We’re all ficked.
I think we should stop worrying about the number of positives as long as the mortality is low. We cannot live in fear forever. People know the importance of basic hygiene, wearing mask and social distancing and many people are vaccinated.
And if it all goes wrong, and we get thousands more needless deaths, the never-quit-whining business mob represented by papers like the Daily Mail, will be nowhere to be seen. They keep protesting against measures for Covid, so let them take the blame.
Lockdown enthusiasts frothing at the mouth in the comments lol
Seems a lot of us in Scotland might be crossing the border for new years eve plans then.
