Mic’d Up: Why VAR made an error with Hwang Hee-Chan penalty call

  1. They did it cause they are shit. Seriously, though, why are Wolves getting so many crap decisions?

  2. Howard Webb – “VAR shouldn’t re-referee the game”

I genuinely hate this approach to VAR. We shouldn’t have a system where the video room can see that an on-field decision is wrong, but allow it to stand just because they think it was a reasonable mistake for the ref to make.

VAR should be a second set of eyes – if they see *anything* that the referee has not, they should tell him what he’s missed. It should be a collaborative process that is used to get the best decision.

At the very least, they should be telling him “here’s what we think based on the angles we’ve looked at, you should go to the monitor to check if you agree”.

  3. Taylor first says “he’s not kicked the ball”. That’s not justification for giving a penalty.

He next says “he’s kicked the player”. That’s where VAR should intervene and suggest to Taylor that ‘actually from the various views around the field he doesn’t appear to kick the player as he pulls out of kicking entirely’.

At that point Taylor should be asked to view the monitor and make a judgement based on what actually happened to see if his view on the pitch was distorted, and to give him clarity on what actually happened. It would still be Taylor’s decision but having a different viewpoint and perception would more likely have led to his realisation that what he thought he saw from his field angle is different to what happened in reality.

  4. When I first saw this, my initial thought was penalty, but var really needed to intervene by over turning it, or advise the ref to take a second look, as a Newcastle fan I felt awful we got this penalty, as Wolves have been hard done by var this season. Hopefully, going forward, var can look at situations like these and be more willing to overturn a decision like this.

  5. After watching this I’m still confused about why they say there’s been a clear error, like they said Hwang hasn’t played the ball and he does make contact. Can someone explain?

  6. Good, now do Hwang’ second yellow call on Kyle Walker now?
