The deaths of crew members of the Russian submarine ‘Rostov na Donu’, destroyed in a Ukrainian missile strike on 13 September, has become the subject of a scandal after relatives were reportedly denied compensation and the dead had to be buried at their comrades’ expense.

Not surprising the Russians always had strict criteria to what was considered a combat casualty. I expect very few that are effected while not in actual combat are fully compensated.
Feature, not bug. Standard operating procedure, not scandal.
Saves enough money to buy Putin his own palatial mansion on the coast
Well they were not in combat and enjoying relaxing shipyard routine.
No compensation for you!
Russia being Russia. Which is why barbarians should be isolated from the civilized world.
The glorious motherland y’all.
It fascinates me how little effort it would take Russia to make issues settle down and yet they insist on doing the worst thing in a given situation.
These people are on board for the war, they probably blame Ukraine for their relatives death, just take care of the post-death business and pay the family the pension and they will go away.
But no Russia needs to fuck around, tell them their family members aren’t dead, then they are dead but won’t get a military funeral, then they don’t qualify for pension.
Western militaries are painful to deal with for veterans affairs but this is a whole new level.
Relative: Where is the compensation we were promised?
Officer: You were not promised any compensation.
Relative: But our Ivan was killed in the line of duty!
Officer: Allegedly.
Relative: What do you mean, “allegedly.”
Officer: I mean did anyone see him performing any duties at the time? Were there any witnesses? We don’t even know if he was killed in the attack.
Relative: Well how else could he have been killed??
Officer: Who can say? There were no witnesses. Maybe it was a freak boating accident.
Relative: What do you mean no witnesses? (Also why is every boating accident described as ‘freak’?)
Officer: Everyone who might have been a witness … is also dead.
Relative: Doesn’t that mean that they all died in the attack??
Officer: Not necessarily, there is really just no way to be sure. So, sadly, compensation does not apply.
Relative: So you’re not going to consider any of them killed in action?
Officer: Oh no, actually they are all listed as “away without leave” since they failed to show up to muster the next morning. Actually there is a fine for that, that your Ivan still owes. Will you be paying by cash? Or by cash plus bribe?
Compensation is for soldiers who die in war.
This is 3 day special military operation.
