Oh wow, real story to tell. When I was a kid my parents had built their social clique around the Ice Skating rink at Heist-op-den-Berg. We went there every Sunday morning for years, my mother upstairs having her weekly gossip hours with her friends, and me, my dad and his buddies ice skating. We were practically part of the furniture, and my parents knew everyone that worked there.
My dad sort of had a hobby with recording music on cassettes, and taping on VCR’s. So he wound up producing mixtapes to be played on the aging sound installation they had back then at the rink. This usually ended up as a mix of music mostly my parents and their contemporaries would enjoy. Being born in the 40s, most of the music chosen was from the late 50s, 60s and 70s.
But then the rebellious teenager that I was becoming demanded atleast some music on there that I would personally enjoy. They obliged me 1 or 2 songs on the tape, to be played on the aging, crackling speakers they had hanging in the 4 corners of this big arched dome building.
So every Sunday morning, que a series of golden oldies like Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Bob Dylan, and some Flemish Classics like Will Tura and Luc Steeno, Marva, Rocco Granata and the likes. To be cringingly interrupted by Rotterdam Terror Corps, Marshal Masters or DJ Néophyte. This later gradually shifted to whatever new heavy metal band I had discovered and thought was the best music for all present to enjoy some pleasant Sunday morning ice skating, or drinking rozenbottel thee upstairs.
Years later, finally entering the modern age the rink management implemented a digital public playlist that basically anyone could select songs on to play at the rink, no registration required. It was great fun forcing attendees to listen to Slayer, Slipknot, Dimmu Borgir, …
So please tell me there’s atleast some of that on there. Surely there must be.
Judging by the colours and iconography I’m guessing Kalinka
Dat was de place to be hier in de Kempen voor de Johnny’s en Marina’s in de jaren 90. Technotronic – Pump up the jam en zo.
Van de Cringewinkel….
Which Kringwinkel? I’d love to get my hands on this
