  3. Why not leave them in the wild? Rescuing and rehabilitating animals is one thing, locking them in a box for people to walk past and ogle is just wrong.

    Now it is Panda Diplomacy initiated by China. Will it pan out?

  9. I know everyone is making jokes about this but I think that this is good, mainly because I hope for better US China relations but a big part of it is also that pandas are AWESOME. They don’t do much, they are endangering themselves by refusing to mate and they are so big and cuddly. I hope where ever they end up treats them well

  14. I wouldn’t really call it a gift, it’s kind of a big expense. Technically China leases the pandas out for a typical 10-year renewable term. The annual fee ranges from $1 million to $2 million per pair, plus mandatory costs to build and maintain facilities to house the animals. The bamboo required to feed them is also a large expense.

  23. It seems inevitable that China and USA are on a collision course to future war. I really hope that we can both prove ourselves better than our past mistakes and live/benefit from each other. If pandas are a symbol of our goodwill, please send more pandas. If pandas can talk China off the Taiwan ledge, I’ll take a dozen.

    I have my doubts of panda-diplomatic relations but who knows maybe they make good statesmen.
