Since I was young, I dreamed of having a cottage in the wilderness where I can enjoy nature and solitude. Today I bought my dream ‘mökki’ deep in the Finnish forest. This is the view from the terrace. I think I can say: “mission accomplished!” 🙂

  2. A bit of background information: me and my wife were both exchange students at the University of Tampere when we met. Even though we later moved away from Finland, we are still very much attached to the country and usually rented a mökki for summer holidays.

    Last summer we thought we looked at a few mökkis to buy, but none was nearly as nice as the one we usually rent. So we contacted the owner, like: “just in case you would ever think about selling…” well, he would, and after a bit of haggling and discussion, we finally bought the place.

    Today we fley in to sign the deed, and you can not believe how good it feels to sit here in our very own cottage.

    And yes, as a teenager I indeed dreamed of living in the forest somewhere in the US or Canada. Well, nothing against Canada, but this here is definitely better 😉 even though I won’t be able to live here full-time just yet…

  4. The dream! I grew up on the southern Finnish coast and live in Berlin since a few years. Not a day goes by where I don’t missing finnish nature 🌿

  8. This is a lovely view. Of course I would expect the price to vary wildly with the size & condition of what’s behind the camera. Gotta ask, though: how remote is it & how’s the broadband & recurring expenses?

  10. I think this is as Finnish as it gets. Now all you need is to crack open a cold one, warm up the sauna and put some “järviradio” -radio station playing off an 80’s radio/cassette deck and you have a guaranteed citizenship! 😀

    edit: oh man by the way do you guys have sauna? I just assumed.. And also, when can I come and visit?

    sorry if asking for too much but as I never been to Finland, I would like to know what are the average prices to buy a piece of land with a small house in the mountains, how are the roads to your Mökki. I always dreamed to have a tinny house and some land somewhere in Finland or Norway but it is quite difficult for me as I am from a third world country even though I am from Europe, just not part of EU.

  18. Gotta say “ai että!” Im 12 and i’ve always dreamt of a cottage in Lappi. My family and i have rented cottages for couple of days and the feeling after sauna is amazing. You’re living a dream.
