makes sense english is the language of europe ( sorry France )
stop trying to make French happen. it’s not going to happen.
that time has passed. move on.
Well, if you don’t want speak English, then the main language should probably be German and not French.
Wow it’s almost as if there was more than one country with English as its official language that was part of the European Union.
Make English lingua franca.
Everything else is just pointless shoehorning of languages that will vanquish a lot earlier then English.

It’s funny how the only people angry at this are the French. And the Walloons probably.
There are lots of other languages in the EU, French is just one, and it’s impossible to pronounce for many people, and French people won’t speak it to anyone who doesn’t speak it flawlessly. Get over it.
I think this is idiotic. English is the new international language of communication. If theg want to introduce French, why do people working for EU have to be discriminated for potentially not knowing it? Why other European languages aren’t the language for recruitment then? Equally relevant to French at this point.
Obviously English is going to dominate. What could take its place, Esperanto?
Finally, the era of Esperanto is upon us
To avoid dominance by any nations‘ language, the EU should pick a small, neutral, non-EU language and just arbitrarily start doing business in it and force it onto the world stage. Like Nepalese or Malawi. The harder to learn the better.
Because it’s effectively a Capital of the European Union. It’s more practical to have English.
Speaking English in EU meetings just makes more sense, I know some in the EU would like to give a middle finger to the UK, but using English just makes more sense.
Let’s switch for Estonian once for all.
If you want to destroy the EU, there is no better start than to try to displace English in Brussels. Without English, everything would grind to a halt.
How about a compromise to the French – we switch to American English. This way we get to keep English and they get to snub the British.
The French are truly insufferable when it comes to language and can’t seem to wrap their heads around the idea that language is what the people speak, not what you’re trying to get them to speak.
Language barriers are already crippling us. They’re legitimately one of our biggest economic barriers because they prevent efficient distribution of the workforce and keep the open market fractured.
We’re all gonna speak English at some point. My guess is there’s gonna be a “Continental Europe English” dialect or something like that in the future. We should be helping that process along not fight against it.
When I have kids I’d rather them be able to move where they want/where they’re wanted and instantly be able to integrate rather than keep them speaking a dying language out of my own misguided pride.
Water is still wet.
English is easy to learn, it’s just efficient
It’s actually crazy, in city centre there are several restaurants where I tried when you try to speak French they ask if you can speak English.
I’m totally down for it, but yes ‘continues to dominate’ is an understatement.
English will always remain supreme. The age of French is over.
And what’s wrong with English? I’m multilingual
As expected. It’s what there is closest to a lingua franca
Basically everyone in the EU under 30 speaks at least decent English. It’s BY FAR the closest thing we have to a common language. For me it’s time we accept it, and appreciate that we’re all about to communicate with each other a little bit better than before
French speakers should get with the times, it isn’t the interwar era anymore. French is useless outside Francophone countries and parts of Africa.
Why not leave English.?
I’m francophone and got a bit offended because everybody was shitting on people trying to expect French in Brussels. I thought it meant “in the city of Brussels” where it is the official language. I did not realise it meant in “the European institutions.”
Yeah it is cringe our politicians and institutions still try to make this happen. Grow the phoque up, English is pragmatism and efficiency because it is already wide spread and so available nearly everybody assimilated it. Alea jacta es bitches.
It’s hilarious that the French only care about language diversity outside of France. 🤣
French is fucking irrelevant. If anything, Spanish makes a lot more sense even.
As it should.
The obsession of native Francophones (French and Walloons) that everyone should learn THEIR language and they should not be expected to speak English is tiring, arrogant and obnoxious.
Stop living in a linguistic bubble and accept that English is the lingua franca. See how easy it is for the Dutch or the Danes or the Swedens to accept that? Even the Germans, the Poles, the Czechs etc. have accepted it.
But Francophones keep sticking their head into the sand and demand that the world adapts to them, instead of them to the world.
I nominate the Irish language..or maybe Welsh as everyone seems to hate Ireland these days 😞
It’s a never ending argument with the French. They are upset because French is no longer the dat to day dominant working language within the EU institutions.
It used to be. Up until a few years after the huge enlargement in 2005 (?).
What the article in the newspaper omits is that to first apply for an exam, you need to have EN, FR, or DE plus another language to B2 level (at most). And then if you are recruited, to get your first promotion, you need to prove knowledge of a 3rd language.
In practice, everyone can work and communicate in EN and FR.
For specialised fields like the one mentioned in the article: if the worldwide industry communicates in EN, it would be useless to have a FR speaker with only B2 level EN.
Good, very good, since UK is out let’s make it an official alnguage and call it a day.
As it should. Move on or accept an even easier language to learn.
Brussels don’t need language to communicate. Point fingers and monkey dance will achieve the same effectively.
English is the most widely spoken language in the EU. Practically every child learns it in school already and the majority of people under 30 are at least conversational. It just makes sense for it to be the de facto language of the EU. Anything else would be arbitrarily forcing a language on millions of people that they do not understand.
I have to say I find French politicians almost pathetic on this matter. As if making laws or going to the court could stop an unavoidable process of the society.
We’re not in the 19th century anymore, French is not the lingua franca, the sooner you’ll accept it, the better you’ll feel
lol, everyone having in depth conversations here about languages other than English in English XD
