1. Russia’s national super power and is the capacity to suffer loss and deprivation without complaint or protest. This is coupled with the curse – this long suffering can never be directed to something good or productive.

2. 90,000 was enough to get them out of Afghanistan, but it also required a regime change, where Gorby took over from Chernenko and got rid of Gromyko the hardliner. We’ll probably need something like that here.
