is this kind of racismn common in austria? I was shocked by this visiting Bad Ischl, which is a rather toursity town with lots of guests from the near east that spend their money here.

  13. its not common to show “that” in such way, but you will see such harsh racisms once in a while.

    just a few days ago this exact sign was brought up at work and everybody thought it was funny, mentioning it was not really ok result in statements like “its statistically right so it is ok”…, PS: im officially working in a high tech company, so rather “academics”.

    However from my gut feeling there is a mix in Austrians society, sadly we do have a lot of right or right supporters (see FPÖ voting trends), but there are also a lot of people, more than the right/right supporter, who are really ok.

    You have the photo and can probably get some witnesses, you can still do it. However, considering the political climate in Austria, I am not sure of the boys in blue wouldn’t side with the racist bar owner…

    Edit: The fact that this gets downvoted is pretty disgusting. Guess my neighbors are even more fucked than I already assumed. Hope the populists never get the upper hand here in the motherland…

  17. I’m from (near) Bad Ischl and K.u.K. has always done jokes on this board – always harmless tho and not even close to whatever this is.

    For all it matters, the waiter that was responsible for that issued a public apology, I think the guy even put his name out there. One can now believe that or not, we will never know and I don’t know the waiter. Sad to see this, cause it’s still a fantastic bar and one of my favorites, where I have had a lot of great nights but I hope it’s just an isolated incident committed by one guy who thought he was being edgy.

  19. It is quiet present, common seems a bit strong. It is not for nothing that right wing party FPÖ currently leads in the polls with about 30%. And I can assume that a shockingly high percentage of people would at least silently nod in agreement over this BS.

    But it is a) not racist but xenophobic (much more common in Austria than actual racism) and b) as inflammatory as it without a doubt is, couldn’t there be some statistical truth to it?

  22. There was a bit of an outcry a week or so ago when it first got published, and the owner had to issue a public apology. But unfortunately no one was really surprised – Upper Austria, especially rural Upper Austria, is a hotbed of right-wingers, and there’s a modicum of truth in the old adage “Wer nix wird, wird Wirt” (those who fail at life become innkeepers instead). It’s not the most worldly demographic and it’s a well researched fact that racism is more prevalent among the uneducated. During the pandemic, several restaurants came under fire for similar reasons, mainly putting up covidiot propaganda posters …

  26. half of the people here (which I guess are young and know how to make use of the internet) supporting this kind of xenophobia and hatred towards muslims, jews and everything that doesnt eat pork, is more shocking than the sign itself. guess they never overcame 1939-1945. poor guys! still hoping you guys dont know how to vote.

  28. I recently moved back to Vienna after 11 years abroad and I definitely notice the xenophobia/ racism towards Muslims in particular (especially compared to London). It’s also very noticeable in the Israel/Hamas conflict – total dehumanisation of Palestinians in most posts you see here.
