Does anyone know what is the meaning of this (constant honking)? Is this a cultural thing in Turkish weddings?

  1. That is a Corso. Cars driving around and honking like crazy.

You can see it at weddings, for the drive from church/standesamt to the reception. This is done by many wedding parties, in no way exclusive to turkish ones.

You can also see it after important wins in Football. Like, a local team winning an important title, or the german national team winning a game in eurocup or worldcup.

  2. The highlight of any wedding! Listen, I’m as German as they get, and over forty, and this was already a thing when I was a wee child. This isn’t just a Turkish thing, or Mediterranean thing, this is a German thing too, and has been for at least two generations (my parents and mine).

  3. This has been a German tradition as well for as long as I remember. It has increased in intensity in recent years, but as I said it’s nothing new.

  4. Today I learnt this is not a worldwide thing. In everywhere I’ve lived; Nigeria, India, the UAE, France and Germany, I’ve seen this happen

  5. In the Netherlands this happens from time to time in the bigger cities. Most of the time the police gives out fines for obstructing traffic and using the horn without a valid reason.

  6. Not just Turkish weddings. It’s a common thing for German weddings as well. Sometimes people who aren’t even part of the ceremony will honk back at them to wish them good luck.

Yes, it’s pretty stupid and annoying.

  7. Here’s a crazy thing I saw when I was in Turkey last summer. We were on a highway and there was a limousine with a Bride looking out of the top Window. So everybody saw that they got married. To get to the point, while on the highway a car drove right next to them and gave some money and congratulated them while they were still driving on the highway

  8. I fucking hate this as I am Turkish and this is a big part of my country. So many cars honking like crazy and making noise and disturbing everyone, I am sorry you had to see that.

  9. Serbian corso is doing same after wedding. You know car honking, its sunday and they celebrate driving married couple from church or toward it.
