High number of Covid outbreaks in school settings: HSPC

  1. This was known a couple of weeks ago as outbreak reports are weekly. Last week there were only 2 outbreaks in school settings confirmed. In fact the school setting has had the highest confirmed outbreaks for a long time – because there is such a microscope on them and they actually are tracing.

But today is the best day to publish because going back to school is so hot right now.

  2. Heard from friends who are (2nd level) teachers today schools are saying ~25% of staff are missing, minimal subs available.

Around 25% of students missing too, but those aren’t whole classes and you can’t merge them for obvious reasons so no less supervision required.

Those students who are out aren’t going to get work given to them to keep up with because teachers are going to be overworked just trying to watch the classes/corridors/break rooms etc., which they have to do to enforce social distancing.

This is just mental and isn’t good for the teachers, the students or anyone involved. The only reason schools are open is for child minding.

  3. >The latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre looks at the total number of outbreaks recorded in the fourth wave of the virus between 27 June and 31 December 2021.

Perhaps I am being a big stupid here but schools are closed during the summer so there would be zero outbreak in school from June 27 to lets say September 1st.

If you want to compare like to like you would look at the numbers between Sept 1st and December 31st. That would give you a more accurate view. Doing some **very lazy math**, using existing numbers and calculating four months of numbers instead of six.

    Homes – 613
    Schools – 514
    Workplaces – 305

Yes I know this is not very accurate calculation (I did say very lazy math) as there are spikes of infection with the different variants. If someone wants to do the math, go for it 🙂 You could easily look at the data from June until end of August and point out that schools are much safer as long as you ignore the fact that they are closed.
