We honor another volunteer that was recently killed in action. He was an American Marine Corps veteran that Protect A Volunteer supported. He was a warm, funny, smart and thoughtful individual and will be missed by many. Heroyam Slava!

We aren’t saying his name publicly out of respect for his family.

He was fighting in Ukraine since the beginning of the full scale invasion. Protect A Volunteer connected him with some donors who managed to get him a scope, night vision and other items needed to be effective on the front line. Over the course of their relationship, he really bonded with his donors in their donor chat group, regaling them with funny stories about bad Finnish drivers, somersaulting Sri Lankans, the case of the disappearing honey, birds dropping them fish and other tales of what life was like at the front. He would also get philosophical about life and the war, drawing on quotes from Plato and Shakespeare’s Henry V. He found Ukraine to be a very beautiful country despite the fighting and sent the gorgeous pictures above.

It was obvious he cared very much for his men and spent many hours training them to be better prepared and effective. Despite the challenges, he was committed to the cause and his team. In his own words, “I am here to the end for the defense of freedom.” Sadly, this is not the end we wanted.

Rest in peace hero. We were proud to know you and help you. You were the best of us. Thank you for your sacrifice. Heroyam Slava.
