Alcohol adverts on television and radio will be banned before 9pm from January 2025, the Department of Health has confirmed.
On World Children’s Day, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly signed the commencement order of restrictions introducing the alcohol broadcast ban.
A broadcast watershed for alcohol advertisements on television will be in place before 9pm.
Meanwhile, the watershed on the radio will apply from midnight to 10am and then from 3pm to midnight.
These changes will come into effect from January 10, 2025.

You mean I’ll have to wait until 9pm to see the next absolute top banter classic ad from some tepid marco shite about how much its get Irish culture and is one of the lads? Fuck sake.
It seems like this will very little difference to anybody.
People don’t buy alcohol because of advertisements. And advertisers know it. It’s down to brand reinforcement at most.
good
Now do gambling
Should be banned for ads altogether – why are smokes demonized as purely unhealthy, cancer causing death sticks with plain packaging enforced etc, but alcohol which also has 0 health benefits, is a carcinogen and causes liver cirrhosis allowed to show ads and have fancy packaging on shop shelves?

So wait… does that mean alcohol ads are banned between 10am–3pm, or they’re only allowed between 10am–3pm?
Good to see something good came of those Rockshore ads, even the government couldn’t stand them it seems.
Look it’s a nice idea and I can understand it but it’s also meaningless really. This is FFG ticking a box as usual and acting like they made history. Same with raising the prices on them every year. It doesn’t stop people drinking more if they have issues.
They’re opening pubs and clubs until 6am, and still closing offies at 10pm? Sure what’s an ad going to do. They’ll just promote on social media where they’ve all flocked to anyway.
Ireland’s binge drinking issues stem far deeper than ads on channels that nobody watches anymore anyway.
Good
So I won’t have to hear that insufferable Rockshore ad and song during my dinner anymore?
You mean I’ll never see a wonderful Rockshore ad again?! 😩😩
Does it also include the non alcoholic brands they do.
Would be good to ban all ads before 9 pm 😉
Wait I thought they where already banned.
And you’ve only got til 10pm to buy a drink in the off-licence 😂 – see that ad will become a trigger to get booze in 😂
All the alcohol ads are piped into podcasts. Either inserted, or the hosts sent free booze. Are there any rules to online advertising?
It’s terrible Joe

The government really really really hates alcohol, I think in a show of solidarity, the dail bear should be abolished.
That’ll learn us
Why wait til 2025? Do it now.
Why do they even need ads for alcohol. I have never been at home sat on the couch watching telly and a carlsberg ad comes on and suddenly I’m gasping for carlsberg. Or any drink for that matter.
I make my decision of what to drink when I’m in the pub or in the off licence. I don’t think an ad has ever made me want to buy a specific brand.
Im glad it’s not a total ban, that Guinness ad with the snow is like a mental trigger for letting me know it’s christmas
Oh no!
Now they are going to have to put a small ‘non-alcoholic’ caveat on all the adverts blasting Guinness and Heineken at us.
As always, ireland behind by 20years. This has been a thing for many years in many countries.
But surely the Guinness Christmas ad will be exempt from this?
Good news
As man, does that mean no more Guinness Christmas ad?
As someone who lives abroad, seeing that ad when I come home for Christmas genuinely makes me feel at home. It has always given me the biggest ‘happy warm chills’ when it plays and me and the family are sitting by the fire. Without fail
