  1. Dental crisis, or not brushing them properly?

I’m not a professional toothologist, but I’m pretty sure that all your teeth don’t spontaneously go bad at once.

  2. This isn’t a dental crisis this is pathetic parenting

  3. This isn’t lazy parenting… there are all sort of reasons why kids teeth go bad, and dentists for kids are so important.

One super common cause is ‘chalky teeth’, which could affect anyone.

Many children have a condition called ‘chalky teeth’ which can start after any normal childhood fever. If they see a dentist regularly this can be treated. But if they don’t, their teeth wear down to the point that they find it hard to eat.

  4. Going to the dentist as a child used to be a kind of rite of passage that reinforced good dental hygiene. Whats the point of brushing your teeth if you dont get stickers from the dentist

  5. Even before Covid this was a problem. I encountered a very calm attitude about cavities at one picnic with parents comparing numbers and seemed shocked that my then 7 year old had none. But never stop their kids drinking fruit juice constantly. This was in 2019. Naturally bad teeth does happen, my mums baby teeth came through rotten and had to be removed as they came through and this was in the 50’s but people try to all say it’s genetics.

  6. One of those posts that undoubtedly stoke emotive reactions which are quick to blame poor parenting, or perhaps better described as wilful neglect.

It’s not a straightforward forward black and white answer, there’s multiple things at play here:

  7. The prevalence of ultra-processed hyper palatable food is almost certainly an aspect to this. More needs to be done to make healthy foods cheaper and more accessible

  8. We’re going back to the days when women would have all their teeth removed to make them easier to marry off …since their husband’s dentist bills would be cheaper.

  9. The parents should be investigated/charged for child abuse.
Pure lazy parenting. I’m sure plenty have excuses for it.

  10. I know a parent that has been giving her child full sugar coke in his bottle since he was about 2.

Some poor kids really don’t stand a chance in life.

  11. Well, there is a stereotype about the brits and their teeth

  12. Jesus Christ why have kids if you’re going to refuse to parent them?!

  13. The parents of these kids are not parenting. There are a lot of them too.

  14. Parrots not properly brushing their kids teeth, no doubt as their parrots did not properly brush theirs. Did someone not promise us education, education, education a while ago ? I wonder what happened to him.

  15. One of the stereotypes related to British people is that they have bad teeth, so this checks out.

I don’t agree with people saying it’s not the parents’ fault. Of course it’s their fault for not following their kids properly. It’s not the school’s job to parent them, it’s not the dentist’s job, and it’s not the government’s.

Yet, lots of people seem to think that nothing is ever the parents’s fault when it concerns their children.

  16. Parents….well they aren’t parenting.

I saw a women put Dr Pepper into a bottle and give it to its child along with a Greggs sausage roll.

  17. Parents not responsible for their children’s health and hygiene. Got it.

  18. I’ve just moved to the north-east. This is no exaggeration… I rang at least 12 different dentists. None of them are accepting new patients for NHS treatment. I searched up to about 10 miles outside where I’m living now.

I found one that said they will accept me if I need emergency dental work. But if I want routine / preventative work, no dice. Not sure wtf I’m supposed to do other than continue doing my best to look after my teeth (brush twice a day, floss once a day, use mouthwash).

  19. So to put this into my perspective my kids 7 and 4 l, tend to brush their teeth pretty well (under supervision) but we have been pushed back a few times this year for dental appointments (each time it’s pushed back 2-3 months) and I’m dreading if anything comes up. At the last check up they stated that my son may need braces due to overcrowding as his adult teeth come through and he is now complaining of his jaw hurting.

So I can imagine that children with underlying dental issues get missed / overlooked.

I am personally not registered at an NHS dentist anymore due to not being able to get an appointment in over 2 years and have pretty much given up on getting appointments.

Soni would agree that there is a dental crisis but also parents should take responsibility for the basics of dental care.

  20. Anyone playing down the horrendous shortage of NHS dentists is batshit crazy.
