Just to get ahead of the inevitable comments claiming that old gas cars have lower carbon emissions than new EVs – the vast majority of any car’s carbon emissions [are incurred in operations, not manufacturing](https://www.ucsusa.org/sites/default/files/2022-09/driving-cleaner-report.pdf), and the carbon emissions reductions of going from a gas car to an EV exceeds the carbon footprint of building the latter. This means, in the long run, we can actually realize a lower carbon footprint by scrapping older gas cars and replacing them with new EVs.

    Of course, replacing a used gas vehicle with a used EV would be preferable.
