Do you think as always it will benefit investors, and annoy Londoners. Or be an icon enjoyed by everyone?

  1. It’s a great idea. But in an absurd location. It should happen somewhere else.

  2. I’m sure I saw an article about this ten years ago. I’ll be surprised if it goes ahead in it’s current form.

I would love to see it though. The one in LV looks amazing. They should knock down the o2 and build it there.

  3. Great venue but I wouldn’t be happy if I lived next to it. It seems more than a little distracting. Not sure what a more suitable location would be though.

  4. I hate it. Little more than a folly and another carbuncle on the horizon.

  5. Is there demand for another big venue? What with music becoming more fragmented and artists not getting as big anymore. I know there are still artists that can sell out arenas but we have the 02 and Wembley already.. is there really enough demand for a 3rd?

  6. It’s more of an attraction than an a venue, like the O2 before it was the O2, but if history repeats itself… idk

  7. Not my bedroom its gonna be beaming into so I dont really care, go for it!

  8. Wrong location..

Ideally you’d knock down the O2 and put that in the spot if you want a vanity project.

    Stratford is a bit meh.

It’s also a bit… Well… The O2 can take 20,000 people Vs the Vegas eye is 18,000 people.

The building is a bit excessive in size for the purpose. Also assuming the developers haven’t seen electric prices in the UK.

Boxing will still go to Saudi though.

  9. The vegas one is incredible because of the sheer size, as per usual like anything copied on the uk, it will be dumbed down, so will probably be half the size and no where near as spectacular. Also boring that they are turning it off at 23.00, just dim it a bit

  10. Well…good luck to the residents of Newham. There’ll be a lot more noise every night going forward

  11. Funny you posted this today, as it’s just been announced Sadiq Khan is blocking the proposal. It was an absurd location to suggest.

  12. It’s awful, the people behind it are offering nearby neighbours black out blinds. Is that going to be sufficient and a permenant fix? no.

  13. It’s fine to build a venue, it’s horrific to build one that is covered in lights and shows ads.

  14. A hallow spectacle that only mirrors the ambition of the ruling class.

  15. After this the only thing more we need is for someone to dump an enormous freshly stinking turd on London.

  16. The O2 is like watching a band in an aircraft hanger. Why would I want the Sphere? Bring back and invest in small music venues. That’s where the fun is.

  17. No real demand for it (despite what MSG shareholders will tell you), out of place in Stratford and it’ll be an eyesore so no thanks. Better placed in Dubai.

  18. I was anti it until I saw the Las Vegas sphere in person and now I’m not so sure. I didn’t see a show there but the videos from U2s show looked incredible. I think it would be better to somehow incorporate the interior features into the 02 Arena instead.

  19. Sadiq Khan continues his NIMBY crusade. Get it built and move on. £800m of investment and he says no because some local residents who live in the centre of London might think it’s noisy. Honestly I want to get a list of anyone who opposed it and boom club tunes into their homes 24/7 Guantanamo style.

  20. It hasn’t been approved in London has it? We should not be copying Las vegas

  21. I was in Vegas recently and, in the context of Vegas, it was less intrusive and more fun than I thought it would be. However, in Vegas, it’s sort of buffered by the Wynn conference centre and golf course and the Venetian conference centre so I don’t think has any issue in terms of glaring into hotel rooms or residential areas. My room was about 500m away and it was, I dunno, kind of cool and nowhere near as bad as people are making out.

But the context of Vegas is that everything is a bit extra and gaudy and silly and you have to just go with it.

However I also used to live in Stratford – on the Stratford High Street side of things. I can’t really figure out where it will sit and seems like it will be much more intrusive in terms of residential, but honestly that’s the main factor. You wouldn’t want to live much closer to it than half a kilometre, because up close it is super bright.

Also Stratford isn’t Vegas and I don’t think it would really want to be!

  22. The LV one is currently losing 100mill a quarter in costs.

I’d love to have seen an equivalent one in London.

It does look like the owners of the O2 have been able to sway the planners.

London can totally support another 12-15k venue. Perhaps it would have been better as a replacement for the ABBA arena or somewhere else on the Olympic park further from the homes.

  23. It works in LV bc of its extravagance and obnoxiousness. London? No.
