Finland and Sweden ‘closer than ever’ to joining Nato after Putin’s threats backfire

  1. Sweden maybe but I don’t see Finland ever actually joining nato. Historically the Finns have balanced the threat of the east against being close to the west without ever provoking a response well. This would bring a lot of problems for them.

  2. It almost seems like that’s exactly what Putin wants, for some unfathomable reason. He certainly does his best to drive Finland and Sweden into Nato’s arms.

  3. I sincerely doubt we join NATO. I’d rather see even more increase in nordic military cooperation. I don’t think the Swedish population will go for the possibility of being forced into war however.

  4. Finland & Sweden are part of the EU, I don’t see why they should join NATO when the EU has a defense mechanism for their member.

  5. It really is a self fulfilling prophecy.

NATO had essentially no troops near Russias boders before Crimea.

Because of crimea, NATO sent a tiny token force to the baltlcs (which is still massively outnumbered by opposing russian troops).

Ad now, every further escalation by Putin is likely leeding to more NATO troops at the russian border. Turns out, the greatest cheerleader for NATO expansion was always Putin himself.

  6. All I have to say to this that there are major geopolitical powers pulling one way or the other. I always uphold the most skepticism when I see write ups in international media

  7. Putin’s threats serve their purpose and didn’t backfire. Putin wants to prop up the “enemies everywhere” narrative to gain some extra leverage for internal Russian politics. What that is needed for is the real question.

  8. It might be true but it has nothing to do with Putin’s “threats”. He says this shit frequently.
