I feel the article could have been a bit more specific on some of the intricacies of the plan.

Duh. Thats why We have Nato in the first place. To keep the soviets and later the russians in check. Of cause they would love to dismantle our alliance and fight us piecemeal
Without NATO there would be a lot more wars and a lot more dead Russians. NATO has done its best to save Russians from their own government, but NATO just wasn’t quick enough after 2014, or Russia’s invasion of Georgia, or Russia’s invasion Chechnya…but fingers crossed that the next time Russia threatens one of its neighbours, we are better able to help Russia’s leaders make the right decision to save Russian lives.

All he had to do was continue peaceful relations with EU, not invade Ukr, and partner to be counterbalance against China. Basically keep doing what they were already doing before 2012, and NATO was already falling apart due to lack of firm purpose, US exhaustion with world police, and under funded EU partners. But putin couldnt let go of control of Ukr and let them join EU, and threw it all away.
