  1. Come on r/Unitedkingdom, tell us all why this is a bad thing.

  2. Why not £11.50? The .44 seems random and it won’t change much because everything else will increase in price. Hell, it costs too much for a bottle of bloody milk nowadays!

  3. About time young adults had the same wages as everyone else, always confused me why it only applied to 23+ year olds

  4. Thatcher must be freezing her tits off, the Tories done something decent.

  5. I’m shocked because “the real living wage” is £12 so it’s actually not far off

  6. >But Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has decided the rate will also apply to 21 and 22-year-olds for the first time.

Honestly this is a massive improvement to a lot of students who work part time to pay for bills etc.

  7. Is it the minimum wage or the living wage going up? My understanding is that they’re different things with the latter just being a recommendation?

  8. I best be getting a 12% rise from my employer or I will be raging

  9. Minimum wage is a poor overall societal metric. What is more pertinent is the difference between min wage, median wage, and peak lifetime salary.

There seems to be a sweet spot where min wage is around 60%ish of median that works. If it get too high you see, quite rightly, professions with high barriers to entry being left as people realise why bother being a teacher etc if Aldi pays about the same.

So yes this is good, assuming we see that ratio stay the same. Ideally, we want our doctors, lawyers etc on triple or quadruple the min wage to show the benefits of success and hard work etc.

  10. Here we go, they’re making their move.

May election and they just might not be completely destroyed.

  11. In before the classic race-to-the-bottom minority in these threads of “What’s the point in me doing Job_X when some kid flipping burgers can make a similar amount??” rather than being happy that the very worst off in society during a prolonged cost of living crisis are getting a little bit more.

  12. While a move that will bring more money into the pockets of those that need it most – this must result in more inflation, higher interest rates and a pizza or a Nandos costing £20+?????

  13. It’s desparation as they know they are on a hiding at the poles….

  14. A whole pound per hour?? That’s a whole £8 extra a day! Life of Riley here we come!

Has any one of them actually been shopping before and seen how much shit costs these days?

  15. This is great news!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still going to be tougher to live on the minimum wage than it was a few years ago given how much the cost of essentials such as food and rent have gone up.

But a 9.8% rise this year alone is pretty decent and it’s a lot better than anyone was seriously expecting.

It also shows that the argument over whether a minimum wage is a good thing is pretty much over. I remember when the Tories were telling us that bringing in a sub-£4 minimum wage would actually be bad for workers and cause mass unemployment.

Now they’re boasting that they’re raising it by £1 in a year and the ghouls at the Spectator and the IEA (and their puppets like Truss) are left howling into the void!

  16. That’s actually really impressive and good news for a lot of people

  17. But will they be raising the tax threshold, or will this rise go to them in income tax and national insurance?

  18. Good my nursing friends will get a pay rise as it’s not a good sign if they are earning the same amount as care workers

  19. Ah yes, right on time. This week we’ve covered dropping tax, and now we’re boosting the pay of over half of the country. It’s almost like the current Government is trying to buy votes

  20. Oh look rent and bills has suddenly gone up enough to take all the extra earnings away

  21. Greedy good for nothing plebs! Why can’t poor people just live on nothing?

  22. Nice. A lot of people at my work are on minimum so it will be nice to see them getting a much better wage.

  23. It’s never a bad thing to increase the minimum. But what’s funny is that 5% increase NHS staff had to fight tooth and nail for 6 months ago, is now back below minimum again for many of them.

  24. This is a 9.8% increase rise.

I’m fortunate to not be min wage but I wish I get even half this at the end of the year.

  25. I have said it before. If you are in work and still needing benefits something is amiss.

I get that it is not fair on Buisnesses but the tax payer should not be having to pay for greedy landlords etc.

The min wage should give people enough to live on. Whatever that cost is.

Of course how you stop everyone else putting their costs up is a whole other matter. I am well aware of that
