  1. >“The only weakness that Democrats have on their Social Security policies is not enough people know that it’s them,” said Alex Lawson, executive director of Social Security Works, one of the groups advocating for the idea. “The way to get Republicans even more on the back foot about their plans to cut Social Security is to draw that incredibly clear distinction that Democrats want to expand, Republicans want to cut.”

Yep. Biden has been defending social security this entire time, while republicans want to cut or dismantle social security, and raise the retirement age so more Americans have to work until they die.

    Fuck that. Vote blue

So true, so true. Let’s hope the Dems put a real focus on this.

  3. I have brother, a self-described “MAGA patriot”, whose only source of income is his SS benefits. He literally believes that “Trump *must* have a plan” if SS goes away. He will still vote for Trump even though he knows he could lose income. It’s insanity.

  4. Social Security has been a target of the Republicans SINCE THE BEGINNING in the 1930’s. Yet today there are MAGA types who think that MAGA means working people have “taken over the party”.

No, the working people who support MAGA politicians are voting to kill Social Security.

But why? Why do the Republicans want to kill Social Security? .. Because they want to free the big donors from the obligation of paying into it. For every dollar the working person contributes, the company must match it, dollar for dollar. That is the equivalent 6.2% of whatever the combined wages and salaries are paid out. For the larger employers that is hundreds of million of dollars. They want that windfall, they want the tax break.

Because the super-rich donors (who basically own the party) want the tax break, the party would be more than willing to kill off the program and screw over it’s own voting supporters.

All of the major Republican candidates are on board with this agenda and have publicly stated so, including Trump.

  5. Has the added benefit of really annoying all the people who got invested in pretending that Biden was out to gut social security during the primary.

  6. Remove the FICA cap and increase benefits for all retirees.

  7. Social security is hard to reform though

Like, you can’t do it via reconciliation. You need to abolish the filibuster in order to do that

If Dems have the narrowest majority possible with their current coalition without Sinema and Manchin (so in other words, they hold all seats they have now minus WV and also flip AZ to Gallego), I’m confident they’d get something like a $2t to $3t spending reconciliation bill with more things from BBB proposals, plus narrow filibuster carve outs for abortion and voting rights, which all by itself would make Biden the new FDR. But I’d imagine the Senate wouldn’t go for a broader abolition of the filibuster in general (as opposed to those carve outs)

Dems would need to win even bigger, I’d think, to have a chance. But the 2024 map is brutal, the only other states they could *maybe* flip are TX and FL, and those would be massive long shots. I also don’t know if that would be enough for a general filibuster abolition, I could imagine the dems possibly needing to get up to something like 53 to 57 seats in order to go beyond “narrow carve outs to the filibuster for voting rights and abortion”

  8. Just remove the earnings cap on deductions, we could raise the payments to be realistic.

  9. Easiest way to preserve SS is to remove the FICA cap. The rich will fight it tooth and nail, but that’s the one fix that will work.

Medicare/Medicaid? Move to single payer – e.g., ‘Medicare for all’. Elective stuff (cosmetic surgery, ‘lifestyle’ medicine is paid out of pocket, but basic care prevention and treatment is provided for all. Force competition in drug pricing, etc.

Wealthy interests will do anything to keep their MAGA political base angry about ANYTHING to keep them from realizing how they benefit from social programs…and Trump’s influence has shown just how effective that strategy is. I’ve got a 28-year old kid who benefits tremendously from SSI/Medicaid/Waiver/Housing programs, who’s been pulled into the MAGA/right-wing orbit, when they don’t realize that he would be the first target of killing off those programs….as well as putting him out on the street.

  10. Today’s headline: Biden needs to be more liberal!

Tomorrow’s headline: Biden needs to be less liberal!

Every day’s headline: (insert politician’s name here) would get more votes if they do what I want done!

Going big on Social Security might indeed help Biden. I’m just tired of this kind of story.

P.S.: One year I was very lucky, and made so much money I hit the FICA cap. “Thanks, Mr. Despair! You’ve done enough to fund Social Security this year, even though you made enough money that you could afford to fund it more!” The FICA cap is %$#@ing stupid.

  11. I feel like there are a number of things Biden could do to beat Trump

  12. Go big on SSI , Cannabis Reform, All Student Loan,Affordable Housing Act
Everything thing that needs to be done to shore up the retired, soon to be retired, and those entering the workforce

  13. How about this and marijuana? Gotta get the people to the polls

  14. Weed, the answer is weed. Federal legalization is a winning stance and will attract multiple groups where Biden is struggling to find support.

  15. For the love of God raise the asset limit, it’s been the same since the 1980’s.

  16. And legalize weed. He will never do it, but it would be a game changer for his polling.

  17. Can we stop using social security for id verification also. It was never meant for that which is why the card is paperback. Our Drivers License/ID number should be good enough

  18. All he has to do to win is reschedule cannabis to schedule 3 like his HHS recommended on 8/31 and then campaign on full legalization. When a record 70% of the country, largely bipartisan, is for it then that’s your silver bullet you senile buffoon.

  19. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Endorse and fight for Bernie’s plan.

    Raise the cap.

  20. Social security will go away the moment Trump proclaims himself dictator. Not sure what these elderly morons are thinking.

  21. I remember Obama and his “grand bargain” to rein in Social Security. It always struck me as a loser’s game. I remember watching Trump rallies in 2016 where he was promising to expand it and how excited the audience was. It still boggles my mind that Democrats lost the issue in the the perception of many voters.

  22. How can Trump argue he doesn’t want to cut the safety net [when he literally did that in his first administration](https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/12/politics/medicaid-work-requirements-biden/index.html)? I received the book for Medicaid work requirements in the mail. I still have it somewhere.

Biden should run on the truth. Be honest. Don’t protect republicans in the name of bipartisanship. Throw them under the bus where they belong. We did this, this and this. We wanted to do that thing but republicans blocked it. If we are re-elected we will try again, and we would like to do this, this and this additional thing.

And the idea of expanding social security was one of Biden’s initial campaign policies so it’s not a bad idea for him to run on it.

  23. Just raise the income cap on contributions to the social security trust and the problem is solved. Someone who makes millions a year shouldn’t pay the same amount that someone does making $140k a year. It’s just absolutely stupid.

  24. Why is it so difficult for his team to realize that abortion rights are the slam dunk? The forced birthers have lost every single election since the Dobbs ruling, and we’ve got Biden talking about Social Security??? It’s electoral malpractice to ignore this obvious win.

  25. It’s so awesome how they hold hostage for what is best for the American people until it is the right time to grant that thing.

  26. I’m old enough to remember when you could beat someone who had committed treason against the United States, like Trump did, simply by not doing it yourself (Biden has not).

  27. Republicans will do away with social security if elected.

MAGA idiots just don’t comprehend this. I never get it. The people they are voting for will literally hurt them. How can people be this f’ing stupid?

  28. Republicans wont cut Social Security for their voting base. Theyll say it is going away for anyone who isnt currently a Boomer so the “I got mine, fuck you” holds.

Rip the bandaid off if you are going to do it. If we cant afford to pay for everyone, we cant afford to pay for Boomers.

Either I am paying into a system I, too, will benefit from or why the fuck am I paying into it?
