Spyglass Says Melissa Barrera Was Fired From ‘Scream’ Due to Rhetoric That ‘Flagrantly Crosses the Line Into Hate Speech’

  1. >Spyglass Media Group initially declined comment when Variety broke the news that the company had dropped Melissa Barrera from the cast of “Scream 7.” But now the production banner behind the hit horror franchise’s revival is pushing back on a narrative that has quickly coalesced around the decision: that Barrera was fired for showing support for the Palestinian cause. Instead, a spokesperson clarifies that Barrera’s posts were interpreted as antisemitic.

    >“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” a Spyglass spokesperson tells Variety.

  2. No matter what you think of her and of Israel, the evidence is quite clear in this case.

  3. It’s weird to not be allowed to have an opinion about a war.

Israel is a country, not an ethnicity or religion, and deserves as much scrutiny as any other nation.

Is it antisemitism to say Israel sucks?

Is it Islamophobia to say Palestinians should go to war with Hamas or go ahead and side with them to fight?

The wishy washy statements not to offend anyone in a war is silly. Everyone has an opinion even if it’s not as simplistic as the above questions and it’s bizarre to punish off of that.

  4. Good. You dont get to accuse a country that is defending itself of genocide and expect to get off scott free. Fuck her.

  5. She was fired for posting an article written by a Jewish Israeli historian?

So calling what Israel is doing genocide or ethnic cleansing is “hate speech”? I can see disagreeing with it substantively. But it is in fact not hate speech. This type of extreme disfiguration of the meaning of words is what fuels conspiracy theories.

  7. That is clearly nonsense. What we are seeing is an attempt to manufacture consent for genocide. Basically, they want to silence people who are against genocide. You can go online see that Netanyahu the Israeli prime minister, cleared invoked Amalek from the Bible, where when you read the relevant passages, calls for the murder of men, women, children and even live stock.

Barrera is clearly being made an example of, for being against genocide.

I will not be watching the next scream film, or anything else from spyglass going forward. This is simply unacceptable.

  8. I’m curious about the demographics behind pro-palestinian support. Seems like its overwhelmingly composed of poc and post-colonial nationalities.

  9. The conflict is a shit situation all around. Innocents are dying. Aggression and bloodshed don’t arise out of thin air. Shutting down conversations and eschewing nuance will only exacerbate it all. We should be better than this hive mind nonsense.

  10. Let me guess, she said the Israeil govt and army should try and not kill too many kids.

  11. I need some sort of guide or PSA endorsed by, I don’t know… Someone of moral authority and independent situation so that I can express in socially acceptable terms that it’s of to disapprove of Israeli policies and actions but without being misconstrued as antisemitic.

  12. It’s astonishingly stupid when celebrities feel the need to chime in on political events. And so publicly, too! Why? It’s one thing to spout your nonsense to your little circle of sycophants, but why amplify it to the whole world on social media?

  13. Was it the fact she said the whole ethnic cleansing and genocide comment? Would Isreal tell Palestinians to leave certain areas before they bomb them if they were looking to kill as many civilians as possible? Are people warping rhe meaning of these words now like they did fascist and nazi?

  14. Honestly, they would have been better off staying silent rather than confirming that they don’t believe a genocide is occurring.

  15. Why can’t actors have opinions? When we watch them they are pretending to be someone else anyway.

  16. “Find out who you’re not allowed to criticize” and all that

  17. It is a serious fuckin shame she was fired for posting something that really doesn’t seem to rise to the level of “hate speech” using any metric whatsoever

But nobody is talking about the real tragedy here:

**Why in the name of the almighty dollar are they making a SEVENTH Scream movie????**

  18. Her comments pretty clearly fell into the category of criticizing Israel and the war rather than antisemitism. Bad look for Spyglass

  19. Anti-semitism has been amd remains a profound social ill across many centuries, cultures and countries. And these fucking people make a mockery of it by labelling any criticism or opinion against Israel anti-semitism. It’s maddening.

  20. Just a fun thought exercise, these are some of the most upvoted comments from the firing of Gina Carano

    >This is free market capitalism. Isn’t that what conservatives support? Disney sees her as a financial liability, so she’s gone and they continue making money.

    >It doesn’t matter what she said or any political agenda. It’s as simple as this, Disney said don’t do this or we’ll fire you and she went against the directions of her employer so she got fired.
Disney is one of the most notoriously strict employers. This isn’t a political issue

    >And I think this is an issue a lot of people don’t understand. You’re entitled to your own opinion(no matter how stupid) and you can say whatever you want, that’s protected by the first amendment.

    >consequence culture strikes again.
Just because she said really hateful and ignorant things which were being associated with a multi-billion dollar brand and which could have not only alienated dedicated Jewish and trans fans but also people who have compassion for Jewish and trans people, what, she loses her job and action figures? What’s next? Consequences whenever anyone says something deeply hateful and ignorant in public? Next thing you’re going to tell me I’m going to have to start taking personal responsibility for my own words and actions.
It’s out of control. It’s almost like I had a privilege my entire life of which I was unaware and which did terrible harm to others and I’ve misinterpreted the loss of that privilege and reasonable consequences for my own actions as some kind of persecution.

Why can’t Spyglass also look for its own financial interests much like Disney has done in the past?

This isn’t really about Free Speech. It’s about a private company protecting its profit margin and image.

  21. Bullllllllshit, I really everything she posted after this all went down and nowhere did anything come close to “Hate Speech”

  22. Aside from Scream Spyglass seems to only be making films based on 80s tv shows.

  23. No clue how these idiots keep posting in favor or against a side in a war…why risk your career? Well i guess we can see her “acting” in her Only Fans 😂

  24. Turns out implying the Jewish community controls the media is a bad look, shocking. /s

Saying that people should be able to criticise a country without being labelled antisemitic. All Criticism against Israel isn’t antisemitism, criticising the US government doesn’t make someone a communist, me criticising the UK government doesn’t make me a traitor.

I support the innocent Palestine people but a lot of people voicing their support seem to be downplaying or avoiding condemning Hamas or worse of all straight up denying the groups actions. It’s also ironic people screaming “genocide” when that is literally a major goal of Hamas in the first place.

  25. This is absolute madness. She didn’t say anything wrong and she’s being demonized for standing up for what is right.

This is honest to God very terrifying.
