  1. The price of rolling tobacco is set to soar tonight as [Jeremy Hunt](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/jeremy-hunt/index.html) hammered smokers with huge tax rises in his [Autumn Statement](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/autumn_statement/index.html).

Announcing his latest financial package to the House of Commons, the Chancellor told MPs he would increase the duty on hand-rolling tobacco.

This will rise by an additional 10 per cent above the tobacco duty escalator.

  2. Think of the tax as prepaid healthcare for the cancer treatment you’ll likely need.

That way you can sleep knowing you are helping keep the NHS propped up.

  3. Of course the Daily Mail is sour about this, gotta get the working class angry about having their cancer sticks go up in price to pay for their inevitable NHS treatment

  4. Excellent – be good to see vapes get taxed out of the wazoo too.

  5. Anyone else feel like the government have pivoted slightly from outward transphobia as the culture war they want to fight to smokers?

Very much feels like the changes to smoking are a “how can we get the most goodwill for the least effort” – the change to the age of smoking is something that the following government will have to implement, this is just adding a little bit on.

Comparing it to adjust the tax rates, taxing the rich more heavily etc this feels like a very low effort “how can we get the pearl-clutchers on side” policy to me.

Smokers already pay around 4x as much in additional tax as they cost the NHS and if it was about health there are many other policies or changes they could implement.

Dunno, feels like they’re going for the groups that people will happily punch down on because they’re the “wrong uns” or “undesirables” in the same vein as the “benefits scroungers” or “men dressed as women” that they’ve gone after previously.

Nowhere near as bad as the transphobia was, thankfully, but still…

  6. Oh, no! It’s TONIGHT and not TOMORROW! Well, at least it isn’t YESTERDAY.

  7. Brains to be further rotted by reading Daily Mail TONIGHT

  8. Nothing exposes reddits deeply authoritarian nature more than threads about smokers, vapes or cars.

  9. Who wants 200 Richmond super king from the Dominican Republic?

  10. I always think it’s funny when smokers think that, because it’s heavily taxed, they’re participating in some sort of anti-capitalist or anarchic act.

  11. “Oh yeah, let’s have everyone smoke, because it’s cool and has many health benefits! That’s free money for us from tax AND from having stocks in tabbacco!”

    Years later…

“Lmao look at the loser smoking cigarettes, who is now so addicted he has to keep buying them. Let’s raise the prices again, because it’s easy to exploit those who are addicted. What, you want to quit? LOL you are on your own, thanks for all the money though!”

  12. To an extent, heavily raising tax on tobacco products encourages circumvention of tax altogether.
I’m not a smoker anymore, but I’ve noticed more and more of my friends buying ‘under the counter’ cigs.

  13. I don’t think i actually know a single person who even buys cigarettes or tobacco from a shop anymore anyway, so i guess this is good since its likely own rich people are buying it from shops anyway, i know me and my friends won’t be effected since 100% of everyone i know is buying either stolen from lorrys or imports from other countries lmao

  14. I’d love to be able to gloat because I’ve never been a smoker, and have always struggled to understand why anyone would smoke, vape or do drugs, but my moral high ground is built on more than my fair share of sugar, salty snacks and fizzy drinks, plus the occasional bit of alcohol. I think the closest I can relate is the cost of a pint on a night out is just getting higher and higher, but at least that’s a free-time thing and doesn’t make you stink anywhere near as bad.

  15. The dailymails incessant need to CAPITALISE certain words in headlines is maddening. I realise their target readers are fucking morons, but I give them the credit that they can understand simple sentences with out the need to emphasise like this.

  17. Yet Cigars, Cigarillos and Cigaro’s aswell as snuff and pipe tobacco is still sold in non plain packaging.

Pipe tobacco is really cheap compared to rolling tobacco. You can also get a months worth of snuff for £5. Only want a 10 pack? buy Cigarillos, some are as cheap as £6 for 10.

Cigarettes and rolling tobacco has far higher rises and stricter laws than all of these…I wonder why.

  18. Good. Just ban them already. And vapes whilst your at it. A whole industry we don’t need.

  19. I used to buy cigarettes from the shop and happily contribute to the country via tax while slowly killing myself, but now it’s insane.

The price hikes haven’t stopped me smoking or even encouraged me to cut down. Hell, the less money in my bank stresses me out and makes me smoke more. It’s just stopped me paying tax via my addiction since I get my travelling friends to buy them duty-free.

  20. Both alcohol and tobacco are both group one carcinogens, if one is such a public health concern (tobacco) why isn’t the other? This country needs to move away from its stereotypical and unhealthy drinking culture. It is incredibly dangerous yet its clearly being encouraged by the government.

    Its mind boggling.

  21. This is a better way to cut down on smoking in the population than weird, mostly unenforceable laws that treat adults like children.

  22. Everyone I know who smokes has a way of getting them from abroad. 70 quid a sleeve of 200. Fuck this tax

  23. Literally getting on an international flight ina few hours, perfect timing.

  24. So workers get 2% off national insurance meaning someone earning £35k (which is more than a lot of people) will get a whole £450 extra a year, meanwhile businesses get a £10 billion boost?

  25. i mean… Good? cigarettes aren’t exactly healthy in any way, so… I don’t see why this is a problem?

  26. The price of fags always goes up whenever there’s a budget.

  27. The best kind of tax is the tax I don’t pay so I’m pretty ok with tax on cigarettes going up.
