Discarded toys are creating an e-waste disaster. Here’s how to stop it. Toys that move, make noise, and light up are winding up in landfills — but they could be recycled, with better policies.

  1. From the article:
In the near term: … retailers setting up e-toy take-back programs “would be the fastest” way to start collecting dead toys en masse.
For long term: “We need more policy interventions to simply ban these products that don’t have a minimum guaranteed lifespan or can’t be repaired,”. And we need toy-makers (and parents) to realize kids, especially young children, don’t need their toys to have interactive buttons and light-up features in order to have fun with them. “There’s a lot of things you can do without [the toy] being electronic.

  2. I am pretty sure that a majority of parents hate toys that make noise.

Kids get toys that make noise as presents. At some point, the parent becomes tired of listening to the toy. And the toy ends up being tossed into the trash.
