How to say “Finland” throughout Europe

  1. Origin of both words is very unclear.

No one knows where name Suomi or Finland comes. There are lot of theories for both but no evidence for any of theories being correct.

  2. The Finnish etymology is wrong. It’s not *from* proto Samic, it’s cognate with that proto Samic word. This is like saying Italian comes from Spanish.

    >Koivulehto originally proposed that Proto-Balto-Slavic *šāma- would have been borrowed through Proto-Samic specifically.[6] However, this theory assumes an improbable back-and-forth chain of borrowings, relying on too many unconfirmed assumptions, and thus has to be rejected (especially in light of current information).[7][4]

In all likelihood the word relates to ‘ground’ or ‘swamp’.

  3. Awful map. Besides having a few errors it’s clear the maker just refuses to accept criticism.
