People with lower cognitive ability ‘were more likely to vote for Brexit’ – The cleverer people are, the more likely they were to vote to stay in the European Union, a study has found

  1. Ooft. This will not go down well with the resident Unionist and Brexiteer foamers.

  2. I didn’t vote because I couldn’t decide. After years of the SNP telling me we could be like Norway and Norway famously not being in the EU I found myself in a quandary.

Is being like Norway a good thing?

Not sure if I’m thick as shit or just overthought it.

  3. Personally I think that people have been told by the press and politicians that everything bad is because of the EU, that people in the North of England were suffering, with no/shit jobs. Every bar, taxi, shop seemed to be staffed by Eastern Europeans and when they were given an opportunity to leave the relationship they had been told was toxic, get rid of the foreigners stealing their jobs and to stick it to the man they decided it would be a good idea.

Every single Brexit promise has been broken, which is bad for Scottish independence because people will point to the Brexit lies as reasons not to trust the Yes campaign.

Calling people stupid doesn’t help. Understanding the reasons why they voted to leave will.

  4. I’m REALLY leery of supposedly objective measures of “cleverness”. It’s standardises tests, basically, it measures your skill at taking standardised tests. I reckon you’ll find a similar causal link between likelihood to vote for Brexit and Economic Class, and another similar link between Economic Class and Performance on Standardised Tests.

  5. People who voted for Brexit were also more likely to protect statues

  6. In further news, the Pope was discovered to be a catholic and bears do shit in the woods

  7. Aye – half of Northern Engerlund was under the impression that Brussels wanted to become the capital of Engerlund and that the Queen would be replaced by a German (in full ignorance of the Sax-Coburg history). In addition, Boris and his 350 mill to EU each week was an (imo) blatant lie that the people of the UK took right on the chin. It was treating people like they were utterly dim-witted; and guess what? THEY ABSOLUTELY WERE.

Any person with an IQ above 90 wouldn’t give these grifters the time of day in the years leading up to Brexit. Britain gained nothing, Scotland lost more and NI still stands to lose everything it gained (prosperity, peace, respect) since 1998. The Welsh…well, they voted in the majority to leave so they can be happy that they did the bidding of their fellow roasters, and erstwhile cousins, to the south and east of them.

It was all bullshit, all created by those who want industry further deregulated. A massive, blatant, and not even the least bit sophisticated grift by human garbage like Farage and Johnson et al. Swallowed in one massive gristly lump by an entire populace.

Still makes no sense, no one (except a tory) has benefitted from this. One of the single most boneheaded plays in history.

Fuque Brexit and Fuque the tories. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ANGER REGARDING THE DIRE SITUATIONS THAT WERE CREATED FROM THIS LIE. NOT ENOUGH ANGER AT THE STOLEN FUTURES OF OUR CHILDREN.

  8. The fact this is published in the times gives me the impression it’s been posted for the purposes of riling up their readership more than anything else.

  9. “I didn’t understand this woke word cognitive, but I say FAKE NEWS. You Nazi!!!!”

  10. Study found smart people (those who agree with the Government) are sore losers and will complain for years after the fact

  11. A link to this article is going to be the new version of someone commenting an account creation date.

  12. Ah well it’s a shame so many intellectuals dismissed Brexit as an impossibility and didn’t bother to vote. Looks like those with ‘lower cognitive ability’ are at least motivated.

  13. I assume this comes as more of a shock to those who voted *for* Brexit.

  14. The evil man in Brussels wants to destroy the NHS!

Oh no, wait – that’s the conservative party.

Sorry everyone, my bad. Now respect Brexit or you hate Britain.

  15. What both the Brexit campaign in 2016 and Scotland’s independence campaign in 2014 shared was a lack of rational balanced debate and an abundance of heated reactive debate.

Leaving the EU and leaving the Union are both enormous, multi-faceted decisions with myriad pros and cons involving decades (and for the union-hundreds) of years of history, and both of these referendums were treated by the UK government (and also by the subsequent campaigns) as a simple ‘in/out’ ‘yes/no’ question, as if it were a survey on the quality of customer service at your latest Asda shop.

People in this country were encouraged to vote *emotionally* because there was an absolute dearth of intelligent debate or reliable accurate info.

Personally, these two irresponsible approaches to two referendums that became so toxic, divisive and destructive and, with the result of Brexit, have created a shitstorm – the repercussions of which we will see for generations – are proof (if even more proof were needed) that those who wield power and make the decisions in the UK are *thick as mince*.

Until politicians are forced to undergo intelligence, competence, integrity and empathy tests, we’re fucked- not because of the lack of intelligence in voters, but because of the corruption and self-interest of those we’re voting for.

  16. Yet another excuse to say brexiteers are thick. Or maybe ,just maybe, they don’t share remainer values?
