Crazy to think that so many of the “responsible” owners of bully XLs would rather abandon and see their pet killed than go though the minor inconveniences of a muzzle and pay a £92 fee.
It’s testament to how dangerously unsafe the situation was under the previous status quo. The myth of the “good vs bad dog owner” was really just smoke screen.
Anyone who loves their pet would happily buy a muzzle and get the dog registered, all this proves is many of the owners don’t give a shit about their dog.
Not at all surprising. Pretty obvious that a lot of the people who want a dog like this are not exactly responsible individuals.
Grim.
No matter what you think of the breed, owners who would willingly give up their dogs life for a few hundred quid were never fit to own a pet in the first place.
Dangerous breeds aside, we need stricter rules on owning pets.
I got my current dog by just responding to an ad online and picking him up. He’s perfect, but I also like to think I’m a good owner.
Just thinking how easy that was, the things the seller didn’t mention to me etc. that’s a circumstance with two owners who love dogs, but I imagine it happens all the time with people who just don’t know how to do it or don’t really care
I know the dogs are murder machines but I still feel sorry for them. It genuinely isn’t their fault at all. Pay the registration and look after them responsibly. Eurgh. People.
Vile stuff. I know they’re dangerous but they’re still just innocent dogs that have emotionally bonded with their family, just to be thrown away like an old toy (doesn’t help that the BBC have picked a thumbnail of one doing puppy dog eyes)
If having to pay the fees involved in muzzling and registering your dog is too much to avoid having them put down, then you should be barred from owning any dog again in the future

For the record I agree with the new law and rules set out, but this makes me really sad. I know it’s not a great life for the dogs to stay muzzled, be spayed/neutered and be registered, but that’s way better than no life.
If the answer for these owners is to have the dogs killed rather than the owners jump through a couple of hoops then they shouldn’t have had the dogs in the first place.
Honestly, when I read this, I just assumed it was the XL bully’s killing 8 members of staff per day.
One thing I never see talked about at all, which I do think should definitely be brought up (not to diminish the obvious, but as I’ve never seen this point brought up, it kinda worries me) is how many veterinarians and staff are going to be mentally fucked over by this. Putting that many animals to sleep is going to utterly destroy a lot of people
This is going to take a heavy heavy toll on an insane amount of people, from the owners to the vet staff incharge of doing all this. This is going to destroy a lot of people’s lives
