  1. There always has been other paths, but most people are not aware and many laws (and initial cost to change) create obstacles to those alternatives.

    Simple example: more energy efficient houses. First you have to be able to AFFORD a house. Next you will probably have to retrofit the house with better everything. Windows, doors, insulation, water heater, and appliances. Not cheap. If you want to go solar/wind, you may have to fight your local ordinances/HOA/council, etc. Once past that hurdle, you then have to see what the power company allows. And you can NEVER completely disconnect from the grid, at least in the U.S. You are not allowed.

    Now if you rent, forget ALL of the above. And that’s the end of that.

    That said, yes we do not need 50,000 different kinds of cell phones, TV, game controllers, bottled water, insulated tumblers, microwaves, refrigerators, ad effing museum.
